Drones in Uncertain Environments

Long been a student of uncertainty.

For drones trying to navigate a busy environment like a warehouse or a forest at high speed, the ability to know exactly where they are at all times would seem pretty essential. Not so, say researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), who have a devised a new, efficient way to guide drones around obstacles. The key ingredient? Uncertainty.

With most drones — and, indeed, most self-driving vehicles — navigation starts with a map. To draw one, depth sensors are used to scan the immediate environment which is compiled into a single 3D model. This then tells the vehicle not only where they are at any given moment, but also how to get to their destination. It’s a method commonly known as “simultaneous localization and mapping,” or SLAM.

SLAM has served the community pretty well to date, but it has its downsides. For one, it’s a very intensive process, that needs lots of high-fidelity data and computing power to process it. This is why Waymo and Uber’s recently settled lawsuit was all about LIDAR — the laser-firing sensors used to collect and process depth data. Data is important.

But, this process creates problems at high speeds and with small crafts like drones. They don’t have the time to collect all the data they need, and giving them the processors to understand it all is expensive.     .... "

Kroger Opens Culinary Innovation Center

Always interested in how we can innovate, was part of a number of innovation center efforts. Surprised that Kroger has not done this before.  Now I would ask, how will this do things like spot trends in foods, in consumer process, in connecting resources to customers?   And link those trends to consumer behavior and purchase?    Start thinking about data and pattern and directions.

Kroger spent a reported $2.5 million remodeling the two-story brick building at 901 W. Elm St. in downtown Cincinnati, not far from its corporate headquarters, into the LEED-designed facility. Construction on the Center began in March 2017. .... "

Today, Facebook AI Research (FAIR) is announcing the release of Tensor Comprehensions, a C++ library and mathematical language that helps bridge the gap between researchers, who communicate in terms of mathematical operations, and engineers focusing on the practical needs of running large-scale models on various hardware backends. The main differentiating feature of Tensor Comprehensions is that it represents a unique take on Just-In-Time compilation to produce the high-performance codes that the machine learning community needs, automatically and on-demand.  ....

What to expect next

This release will allow researchers and programmers to write layers in a notation that is similar to the maths they use in their papers and communicate concisely the intent of their program. They will also be able to take that notation and translate it easily into a fast implementation in a matter of minutes rather than days. As the toolchain grows, we expect usability and performance to increase and benefit the whole community.

We will release PyTorch integration for Tensor Comprehensions at a later date.

We are grateful for frequent exchanges with and feedback from the frameworks teams and are looking forward to bringing this exciting new technology to your favorite ML framework.

FAIR is committed to open science and working with the machine learning community to push AI research further. The New Virtual Office

I took several looks at this topic as part of our innovation center work.  Some of the capabilities I looked at still exist, see for example, what was once called Qwaq or "Immersive Terf".   Renamed 'Teleplace'. (tags on these efforts below). We also looked at and developed Virtual Worlds where people might reside and work.  None of these worked out to any degree.  Most people thought the proposal to be inefficient, cold and weird.  None really tested them sufficiently.  Now a new look:

Facebook Introducing Smart Speakers

Fastcompany Says Facebook will introduce multiple Smart Speakers  Unclear if there will be any remnants of the Facebook M assistant, reportedly dropped recently.   We would assume it will integrate the Facebook software.

The social media giant is reportedly getting into the ever-crowded smart speaker market, according to DigiTimes. The site says Facebook will launch two smart speakers in July. The smart speakers will reportedly each have a 15-inch touch screen with the code names Aloha and Fiona.   .... "

Slack Using AI

So far have not been impressed with Slacks chatbot, but gives the impression that they are working on assisting the user.   Especially useful for new or infrequent users.   At first expected this to take the initiative more than it does.  I know that can be annoying, but perhaps another track/window to provide suggestions?  The article takes it further, how do they efficiently connect Slack conversations to specific work process?

Even before it opened, Amazon Go began drawing deep skepticism over whether it could possibly work. Would Amazon be able to create a convenience store in which shoppers gathered their goods and walked out the door having been automatically charged for their purchases? The technology behind it — like driverless cars — has captured the public’s imagination. A reporter from The New York Times staged a shoplifting heist with a four-pack of vanilla soda around the time the store opened in Seattle last month, and failed. The Amazon Go technology worked, and he got charged for the soda. Others have, though, managed to outsmart the system.

But as shoppers gauge the gee-whiz aspects of the store and convenience of not having to wait in line, Amazon is sharply focused on the shopper. The company is always watching. More than 100 cameras in the 1,800-square-foot store are capturing shoppers’ every move to total up the purchase, but that’s just the start.

Amazon isn’t saying what its plans are for Amazon Go — whether the company will roll out dozens more soon, or exactly how the store serves a greater corporate strategy. But many say that by recording shopper behavior at such a detailed level and being able to analyze it, Amazon is hot on the trail of the Holy Grail of retail: really understanding why shoppers do what they do .... Alex Simons, director of program management at Microsoft’s Identity Division, says the company invested in incubating a set of ideas relying on blockchain technology over the last 12 months. Monday’s update will be the first of many regarding how Microsoft plans to use that technology to create decentralized identities (DIDs). ...

Of course, this isn’t a platform Microsoft can tackle alone. It’s working with individuals and organizations through the Decentralized Identify Foundation to create an ecosystem that supports decentralized identities. There are four basic components in this initiative: A W3C-based specification that defines a Decentralized Identifier, an encrypted identity datastore, a server that revolves DIDs across blockchains, and another W3C-based spec called Verified Credentials.  ... Store Assistant: Wal-Mart Makes Its App Smarter

Walmart Makes Its Mobile App Smarter  in ProgressiveGrocer

Walmart has added a handful of new and improved features to its namesake mobile app not only to help customers get in and out quickly, but also to assist them before they even leave the house.

The new features come together under a “totally reimagined experience for in-store shopping” that the Bentonville, Ark.-based mega-retailer has named Store Assistant. The next time shoppers visit their local Walmart, users will fund all of the tools they need in-store under Store Assistant, such as Walmart Pay. Additionally, the product search bar and scanner are easier to find, allowing for a more convenient, speedy experience reading reviews, finding items and confirming prices.  ... " 

Towards Crowd Sourcing Conversational Agents

Intriguing thought, not sure it actually is the same as what we did and called a 'Concierge' model, linking appropriately to other smart agents or people.   More like Facebook's attempt to include humans within the now defunct Facebook M.   Interesting experiment with the examples.  Once again using Amazon's  Mechanical Turk to crowd source.  And again our own experience was that the careful setup is key.

Crowd Workers, AI Make Conversational Agents Smarter

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) have developed Evorus, a chatbot system that recruits crowd workers on demand from Amazon Mechanical Turk to answer questions from users, with the crowd workers voting on the best answer. Evorus also tracks the questions that have been asked and answered, and over time, it will begin to suggest these answers for subsequent questions. 

The researchers also developed a process by which the artificial intelligence (AI) can help to approve a message with less crowd worker involvement. During a five-month deployment, Evorus worked with 80 users and 181 conversations, and its automated responses to questions were chosen 12 percent of the time, crowd voting was reduced by almost 14 percent, and the cost of crowd work for each reply to a user's message dropped by 33 percent. The researchers will present Evorus in April at the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2018) in Montreal, Canada. .... "

Amazon has begun designing its own AI chips, according to an exclusive report from The Information. The hardware is designed for anything powered by Alexa, including the Echo, and would allow the virtual assistant to respond more quickly by adding speech recognition directly to the device.

Right now, whenever a user makes an inquiry on an Alexa-powered device, there is a delay while the virtual assistant contacts the cloud in order to interpret the request. While Echo devices would continue to rely on the cloud for complex inquiries, adding speech recognition directly would allow Alexa to perform simple tasks, such as checking the time, without that cloud delay. ....  "

Center for Machine Intelligence Launched to Help Build a Smarter and Safer Society    University of Southampton

The University of Southampton in the U.K. recently launched the Center for Machine Intelligence (CMI), bringing together researchers and practitioners in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and autonomous systems to develop a coherent approach to research and technology transfer. Discussions at the launch event focused on these various technologies' application in large-scale Internet of Things systems and in the insurance and social care sectors. Research groups within the CMI will focus on the theoretical aspects of machine intelligence, including the Agents, Interaction, and Complexity group, and the Vision, Learning, and Control group. "The formation of the CMI is an important next step at a time of great advances in this field and we look forward to working with industry, policymakers and the general public as we address both national and global challenges," says Southampton professor Sarvapali Ramchurn, who will head the CMI. ... The academic Deep Learning research community has largely stayed away from the financial markets. Maybe that’s because the finance industry has a bad reputation, the problem doesn’t seem interesting from a research perspective, or because data is difficult and expensive to obtain.

In this post, I’m going to argue that training Reinforcement Learning agents to trade in the financial (and cryptocurrency) markets can be an extremely interesting research problem. I believe that it has not received enough attention from the research community but has the potential to push the state-of-the art of many related fields. It is quite similar to training agents for multiplayer games such as DotA, and many of the same research problems carry over. Knowing virtually nothing about trading, I have spent the past few months working on a project in this field.

This is not a “price prediction using Deep Learning” post. So, if you’re looking for example code and models you may be disappointed. Instead, I want to talk on a more high level about why learning to trade using Machine Learning is difficult, what some of the challenges are, and where I think Reinforcement Learning fits in. If there’s enough interest in this area I may follow up with another post that includes concrete examples.

I expect most readers to have no background in trading, just like I didn’t, so I will start out with covering some of the basics. I’m by no means an expert, so please let me know in the comments so if you find mistakes. I will use cryptocurrencies as a running example in this post, but the same concepts apply to most of the financial markets. The reason to use cryptocurrencies is that data is free, public, and easily accessible. Anyone can sign up to trade. The barriers to trading in the financial markets are a little higher, and data can be expensive. And well, there’s more hype so it’s more fun :)  .... "

VR at the Olympics

While listening to the opening ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics.  I noted the statement that some of the things being seen on my 2 dimensional screen had been projected there from a VR model, and may (or may not) have been visible live.   Which makes you think about the accuracy of what you see.

This made me look more closely at what choices exist for watching the Olympics in VR.    Here they are from the Intel site,  these range from goggles to smartphones,  from very low to no-cost to expensive.   From complete immersive experiences to alternate views from 3D perspectives.  Instructive if you are exploring as I am.

Google AutoML Learns

Its long been suggested that the best AI is one that is the best learner.  Then it can learn from other humans, other AIs and the masses of data we are gathering.   Leading to an ultimate intelligence.  This is not quite that,  so the suggestion is a push, but points in the right direction.    From Weforum.org:

Google's AutoML project, designed to make AI build other AIs, has now developed a computer vision system that vastly outperforms state-of-the-art-models. The project could improve how autonomous vehicles and next-generation AI robots "see."

An AI That Can Build AI

In May 2017, researchers at Google Brain announced the creation of AutoML, an artificial intelligence (AI) that’s capable of generating its own AIs. More recently, they decided to present AutoML with its biggest challenge to date, and the AI that can build AI created a “child” that outperformed all of its human-made counterparts.

The Google researchers automated the design of machine learning models using an approach called reinforcement learning. AutoML acts as a controller neural network that develops a child AI network for a specific task. For this particular child AI, which the researchers called NASNet, the task was recognizing objects — people, cars, traffic lights, handbags, backpacks, etc. — in a video in real-time.  ... "

Tracking Human Movements

Scientists Develop Method to Track Human Movements More Accurately   in EurekAlert

Researchers at the North China Institute of Aerospace Engineering, Hefei University of Technology in China, and the University of North Texas (UNT) have developed a data-driven method to better detect and track human movements for use in a wide range of technologies. The researchers wanted to address the tracking of human subject movement with high accuracy and consistency, going beyond simply tracking a person or a car in a surveillance video or tracking the pose of a person to estimate their actions. They used a time-of-flight camera and a three-dimensional (3D) point cloud to identify five extreme points on the human body; after those points are marked, then the joints can be identified. "Given that our depth-imaging device can acquire only surface data of a 3D volume, a detected extreme point could become invisible after an action, [such as] rotation, which makes the consistency of detection critical," says UNT professor Xiaohui Yuan. ... " 

Molecular Swarms

Letting Molecular Robots Swarm Like Birds   Hokkaido University  By Naoki Namba

Researchers at Hokkaido University and Kansai University in Japan have created DNA-assisted robots that autonomously swarm in response to chemical and physical signals, which could lead to the development of future nano-machines. The new "swarm robots" measure 25 nanometers in diameter and five micrometers in length, and they exhibit behavior similar to that of motile organisms such as fish, ants, and birds. "These include the formation of complex structures, distinct divisions of labor, robustness, and flexibility, all of which emerge through local interactions among the individuals without the presence of a leader," says Hokkaido University's Akira Kakugo. He notes the new system has three essential robot components--sensors, information processors, and actuators. The researchers used cellular proteins called microtubules and kinesins as the actuator, and DNA as the information processor. "The system acts as a basic computer by executing simple mathematical operations, such as AND or OR operations, leading to various structures and complex motions," Kakugo says.   ....  "

Massive Drone Swarms for Entertainment

The massive use of drones at the Superbowl and Korean Opening of the Winter Olympics show the  impressive use of multiple drone swarms for art and imply their future use for business and military applications.  Clearly to be seen much more in the years to come.  Intel's involvement of interest.  It was noted that logistic issues required the prerecording for broadcast.  First I had seen the use of the word 'murmuration' with drones, which usually apply to large swarms of birds.

Toured a Cincinnati Whole Foods twice recently, noting the diversity of SKUs.    With exactly this thought in mind.   Had examined some advanced sign tech in Whole Foods some years ago.

On Thursday the company announced that it will add Whole Foods groceries to its Prime Now service in four cities: Austin, Cincinnati, Dallas, and Virginia Beach, reports Reuters. Prime Now delivers products to Amazon customers within two hours of ordering. Customers will be able to get their Whole Foods grub within two hours for free or within one hour for an additional fee of $7.99 per order. Amazon purchased Whole Foods last year and since then has been using the acquisition to change the way people shop for groceries. Though Whole Foods Prime deliveries are only available in four cities at the moment, it’s likely Amazon will quickly expand on the number of locales sooner rather than later.MG ... "

With so many new leaders put in position over the last six months by President Xi, an overall leader secure in his position and clear on his objectives, 2018 is likely to see much more activity to implement policies, economic and social, that move China in the direction that Xi wants. We may need to worry more about overenthusiastic implementation of policy than the inaction we have often seen in 2017.

Again, the year could well be shaped by geopolitical discontinuities. Opportunities for Chinese companies to invest overseas have diminished in a number of markets, but as of yet, opportunities for trade have not been materially restricted by the governments of importing countries. Relations with Japan and the United States remain volatile, with the potential for damaging discontinuities in trade and investment.

Yet China enters 2018 with robust economic-growth momentum. Cortana as Assistant in Context

Not enough out there about Cortana as an assistant.  Here is a start.  Saw a demonstration of building a skill and using it as a chatbot assistant in Cortana.  It doesn't get the same respect as other assistants because MSFT is not providing the right kind of open support for building assistant functions.   It certainly has a huge installed base for testing.  But it has yet to leverage the context of that base in a meaningful way.  Need more examples of it being used in useful contexts.   Send me some and I will link to it.

Had not heard about Amazon's Style Assistant, called Amazon Look for a while.  Of interest because we also examined many 'style' assistants here over the years.   Still unclear how well this would work.   Intrigued by the approach.   Looking for a usage review to see how this works in place.

Under the new Collections tool in the Echo Look app, users can now organize their clothing catalogue by options including color, item, and occasion. The feature also allows users to create customized lists to organize their looks for a weekend away or what to wear to a music festival. Amazon says the feature automatically creates collections for favorites, videos, camera phone photos, seasons, and even weather. ... "

Impact of Innovation from Surveyed Execs

From former correspondent Paul Gillin, always a good writer.  Not sure there is a sharp divide though,  it's more the how and when this will happen.  And how much it is to replace versus augment our skills.   We also interviewed top execs in a previous AI go around, and found both enthusiasm and caution.   But realization it would be a future.  And it was, though mostly deeply embedded in things like smartphones.

Intel Builds Smart Glasses

Still waiting for workable examples.  Ultimately how AR will be delivered  A little surprise to see Intel in this space.  We looked at a number of applications that seemed obvious, but did not prosper.    The idea may be like the personal computer or the smartphone,  once you get it commonly used by a broad population,  applications will emerge.   But first a reasonable, affordable and malleable architecture has to be in place.

Seen by The Verge, they have plastic frames and weigh under 50 grams, a bit more than regular eyeglasses but much less than Google Glass, for example. The electronics are crammed into the stems and control a very low-powered, class one laser that shines a red, monochrome 400 x 150 pixel image into your eye. A social media firestorm erupted last week after a tweet from Netflix arrived that some felt shamed 53 of its subscribers for their obsessive viewing habits.

MIT president Rafael Reif says more than 200 faculty working in fields that include brain science, computer engineering, and robotics intend to participate in MIT IQ. He notes the program is designed to help connect scientists across disciplines and support projects in which they collaborate, as well as seek joint ventures with industry. "This is really about coupling the science of intelligence and the engineering--that is, the basic science of how intelligence works in the mind and brain with the quest to engineer more powerful, more intelligent, more human kinds of intelligence in machines," says MIT professor Josh Tenenbaum. For example, he sees cross-disciplinary collaboration helping with his development of algorithms based on the workings of the brain.  .... " 

Predicting Perfectly with Machine Learning?

Been in the forecasting business for a long time.   Taught it, used it, made excuses for it.   So always skeptical about perfect forecasting.   It does not exist, except in the most narrow contexts.   Can we do it better, perfectly ... if we can find patterns better using machine learning?  That's what this points to.  But do remember, its only done it once so far.   Yet finding better patterns can be very useful.

Many of the concerns from consumers were found to relate to screen size, including not being able to see the full picture on a mobile app, missing out on special offers or overlooking hidden costs, according to researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA). Privacy and security concerns can also motivate people to put items into their shopping baskets, but then quit without paying.

Analysis of 2016-2017 online shopping data from consumers in Taiwan and the U.S. similarly found that shoppers are much more likely to use mobile apps as a way of researching and organizing goods rather than as a purchasing tool, which also contributes to checkout hesitation. .... "

U.S. Army Scientists Improve Human-Agent Teaming by Making AI Agents More Transparent

Researchers at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) have developed ways to improve collaboration between humans and artificially intelligent agents. The researchers say they have enhanced agent transparency, which refers to a robot, unmanned vehicle, or software agent's ability to communicate to humans its intent, performance, future plans, and reasoning process. In 2016, the U.S. Defense Science Board identified six barriers to human trust in autonomous systems, including low observability, predictability, directability, and low mutual understanding of common goals. The ARL researchers addressed these issues by developing the Situation awareness-based Agent Transparency (SAT) model, and measured its efficacy on human-agent team performance in human factors studies. One project, IMPACT, focused on examining the effects of levels of agent transparency, based on the SAT model, on human operators' decision-making. Meanwhile, the Autonomous Squad Member project involved a small ground robot interacting and communicating with an infantry squad  .... "

Facial Recognition Beyond the Human

Facial recognition is good for more than security features on Facebook and organizing your photo albums — the artificial intelligence-based technology could soon help ensure that milk in your fridge came from a well-fed cow. That’s right, facial recognition now works on cows. This week, agricultural company Cargill and machine-vision company Cainthus announced a partnership that will create an A.I. system for dairy farmers.

The image-recognition system is able to recognize a cow using both the animal’s pattern of spots and the cow’s actual face. The system takes a few seconds to recognize an individual cow, the companies said. ..... "

Robots Patrolling Walmart Aisles

More on Wal-Mart's Bossa Nova Robotics.  Value and customer impact.  Once again out of stock transparency leads the march for such technology.    We examined many approaches to address this.  Interview.   But once the robots are there, what other capabilities can be leveraged?  Customer reaction is also important, have been in retail lately where order assembly carts started to crowd the aisle, have to watch for that dynamic.

Last Place Aversion in a Queue

While everyone quickly understands this situation,  and I have taken formal queuing classes, I don't remember it being covered specifically.  Balking is the action of leaving a line, but can be for many reasons.  Rarely is a direct marketing design component.  Saw this covered in a long ago presentation at Disney World.   Research in Harvard Working knowledge.

Cortana Intelligence Institute

Cortana still exists, though its seen heavy competition in recent days.   Finally some significant response, but still more research than delivery?  Impressed by what I have seen of MS AI experiments in Azure, but lets seem more practical substance.  Following.

New institute explores the future of Cortana

Today marks the establishment of the Cortana Intelligence Institute – a new, co-funded collaboration between Microsoft Research, Cortana Research and RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, to work on next-generation capabilities for Microsoft’s digital assistant Cortana.

At Microsoft, we are constantly looking for opportunities to learn from colleagues – both inside and outside of the company. Andrew Shuman, Corporate Vice President of Cortana Engineering, told me that Cortana especially needs this energy because it is such a nascent area. “Working with RMIT on the Cortana Intelligence Institute,” he said, “is an amazing chance to inject new thinking in what we build.”

Mark Sanderson is a pioneering information retrieval researcher at RMIT University and a co-chief investigator of the institute. He noted that the institute also represents a novel opportunity for RMIT’s experts in data retrieval, analysis and modeling to ensure their research is relevant to industry.

“Working collaboratively with industry is a key to ensuring our research provides practical solutions to real-world problems,” he wrote in one of our email exchanges. “We are excited that our students and researchers can work with the Cortana Research team on such high-impact research that has potential to significantly benefit so many people.”  .... Microsoft Teams vs Slack

Almost everyone I now talk to now is setting up a Slack channel.  Microsoft Teams is now happening, but still don't see it mentioned by clients.   Has to be a viable, free and easy to use option to compete.   Better links to Microsoft's Linkedin would also be appealing idea to recognize resources, internal and external.

Nicely done overview.  And its not only about Python applications, includes an intro look at accessible and free systems like Gephi.   Many network analysis concepts are described, gives you a view of the ultimate power of the idea.   It automatically visualizes the problem, should always be thought of  Right now looking at how knowledge graphs can be used to prepopulate assistant style systems with context.

As it took off, though, and millions of people began to put a smart speaker in their home, Amazon's ambition exploded. The company saw an opportunity to build a new voice-first computing platform that worked everywhere, all the time, no matter what you were doing. And it began to chase that vision at full speed.

While one team at Amazon works on the Echo products themselves—including the Echo Spot, Show, Dot, Plus, and probably a bunch more since you started reading this sentence—and another works on the Alexa service itself, a different team is working on engineering Alexa's world takeover. While Apple and Google offer access to their assistants slowly and methodically, Amazon has flung the doors off their hinges and let anyone in. The company knows the path to success is not just in Echo devices, and that Amazon can't possibly make every gadget anyone wants to use.
