Memories are shadows of the past but also flashlights for the future.

Our recollections guide us through the world, tune our attention and shape what we learn later in life. Human and animal studies have shown that memories can alter our perceptions of future events and the attention we give them. “We know that past experience changes stuff,” said Loren Frank, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco. “How exactly that happens isn’t always clear.”

A new study published in the journal Science Advances now offers part of the answer. Working with snails, researchers examined how established memories made the animals more likely to form new long-term memories of related future events that they might otherwise have ignored. The simple mechanism that they discovered did this by altering a snail’s perception of those events.

The researchers took the phenomenon of how past learning influences future learning “down to a single cell,” said David Glanzman, a cell biologist at the University of California, Los Angeles who was not involved in the study. He called it an attractive example “of using a simple organism to try to get understanding of behavioral phenomena that are fairly complex.”

Although snails are fairly simple creatures, the new insight brings scientists a step closer to understanding the neural basis of long-term memory in higher-order animals like humans.

Though we often aren’t aware of the challenge, long-term memory formation is “an incredibly energetic process,” said Michael Crossley, a senior research fellow at the University of Sussex and the lead author of the new study. Such memories depend on our forging more durable synaptic connections between neurons, and brain cells need to recruit a lot of molecules to do that. To conserve resources, a brain must therefore be able to distinguish when it’s worth the cost to form a memory and when it’s not. That’s true whether it’s the brain of a human or the brain of a “little snail on a tight energetic budget,” he said.

On a recent video call, Crossley held out one such snail, a thumb-size Lymnaea mollusk with a brain he called “beautiful.” While a human brain has 86 billion neurons, the snail’s has only 20,000 — but each of its neurons is 10 times larger than ours and much more accessible for study. Those giant neurons and their well-mapped brain circuitry have made the snails a favorite subject for neurobiology research.

Researchers at the University of Sussex traced a learned behavior in Lymnaea snails to a circuit of just four neurons in its brain.

The tiny foragers are also “remarkable learners” that can remember something after a single exposure to it, Crossley said. In the new study, the researchers peered deep into the snails’ brains to figure out what happened at the neurological level when they were acquiring memories.

Coaxing Memories

In their experiments, the researchers gave the snails two forms of training: strong and weak. During strong training, they first sprayed the snails with banana-flavored water, which the snails treated as neutral in its appeal: They would swallow some but then spit some of it out. Then the team gave the snails sugar, which they gobbled up avidly.

When they tested the snails as much as a day later, the snails showed that they had learned to associate the banana flavor with the sugar from that single experience. The snails seemed to perceive the flavor as more desirable: They were much more willing to swallow the water.  ... '

Today we kick off a series of blog posts about exciting new developments from Google Research. Please keep your eye on this space and look for the title “Google Research, 2022 & Beyond” for more articles in the series.

I’ve always been interested in computers because of their ability to help people better understand the world around them. Over the last decade, much of the research done at Google has been in pursuit of a similar vision — to help people better understand the world around them and get things done. We want to build more capable machines that partner with people to accomplish a huge variety of tasks. All kinds of tasks. Complex, information-seeking tasks. Creative tasks, like creating music, drawing new pictures, or creating videos. Analysis and synthesis tasks, like crafting new documents or emails from a few sentences of guidance, or partnering with people to jointly write software together. We want to solve complex mathematical or scientific problems. Transform modalities, or translate the world’s information into any language. Diagnose complex diseases, or understand the physical world. Accomplish complex, multi-step actions in both the virtual software world and the physical world of robotics.

We’ve demonstrated early versions of some of these capabilities in research artifacts, and we’ve partnered with many teams across Google to ship some of these capabilities in Google products that touch the lives of billions of users. But the most exciting aspects of this journey still lie ahead!

With this post, I am kicking off a series in which researchers across Google will highlight some exciting progress we've made in 2022 and present our vision for 2023 and beyond. I will begin with a discussion of language, computer vision, multi-modal models, and generative machine learning models. Over the next several weeks, we will discuss novel developments in research topics ranging from responsible AI to algorithms and computer systems to science, health and robotics. What Do ChatGPT and AI-based Automatic Program Generation Mean for the Future of Software

Since the release of the ChatGPT interactive AI assistant it has been surprising to see some of the snide, passive-aggressive reactions from some (not all) members of the software engineering community, in the style of  "it's just inference from bad data". Let's get real, folks, it is truly game-changing. The kind of thing that you witness once in a generation. (The last two times were object-oriented programming and the World-Wide Web.)

Basically, if you need a program element and can describe that need, the assistant will generate it for you. There is no particular restriction on the programming language that you choose, as long as its description and enough examples are available somewhere. The code will be pretty good. (More on the semantics of "pretty" below.) You can ask the assistant for a test suite and various other adornments.

Programmers no longer needed?

Trying this tool seriously is guaranteed to produce a  "Wow" effect and for a software engineer or software engineering educator, as the immediately following step, a shock: "Do I still have a job?". At first sight, you don't. Especially if you are a programmer, there is not much that you can do and ChatGPT cannot.

In assessing this observation, it is important to separate the essential from the auxiliary. Any beta release of a new technology is bound to suffer from a few pimples. Instructive in this respect is a look at some of the early reviews of the iPhone (for example those on CNET and on PCMag), lamenting such horrible deficiencies as the lack of Bluetooth stereo. I could complain that the generated code will not compile out-of-the-box, since ChatGPT believes that Eiffel has a "do" keyword for loops (it's loop) and enumerated types introduced by "type" (it doesn't). These bugs do not matter; the tool will learn. What does matter is that if I ask, for example, for a Levenshtein edit distance program in Eiffel, I get something that is essentially right. Plus well-formatted, equipped at the start of every routine (per good Eiffel style rules) with a header comment explaining clearly and correctly the purpose of the routine, and producing the right results. Far beyond the Turing test. (To be more precise: as readers of this blog undoubtedly know, a tool passes the Turing test if a typical user would not be able to determine whether answers come from a human or a program. In this case, actually, you will need to add a delay to the responses of ChatGPT to have it pass the test, since no human could conceivably blurt out such impressive answers in a few seconds.)

What comes after the bedazzlement? The natural question is: "What can I do with this?". The answer -- for a programmer, for a manager -- is not so clear. The problem is that ChatGPT, in spite of its cocky self-assurance (This is your result! It will work! No ifs and buts!) gives you, for a non-trivial problem, an answer that may work but may also almost work. I am no longer talking here about growing pains or bugs that will be fixed, but about essential limitations.  ... '

On the Future of Programming

Deep learning (DL) has arrived, not only for natural language, speech, and image processing but also for coding, which I refer to as deep programming (DP). DP is used to detect similar programs, find relevant code, translate programs from one language to another, discover software defects, and to synthesize programs from a natural language description. The advent of large transformer language models10 is now being applied to programs with encouraging results. Just like DL is enabled by the enormous amount of textual and image data available on the Internet, DP is enabled by the vast amount of code available in open source repositories such as GitHub, as well as the ability to reuse libraries via modern package managers such as npm and pip. Two trail-blazing transformer-based DP systems are OpenAI's Codex8 and Deepmind's AlphaCode.18 The former is used in the Github Copilot project14 and integrates with development environments to automatically suggest code to developers. The latter generates code to solve problems presented at coding competitions. Both achieve amazing results. Multiple efforts are under way to establish code repositories for benchmarking DP, such as CodeXGLUE19 and CodeNET.20

The advent of DP systems has led to a few sensational headlines declaring that in the not-too-distant future coding will be done by computers, not humans.1 As DL technologies get even better and more code is deposited into public repositories, programmers will be replaced by specification writers outlining what code they want in natural language and presto, the code appears. This Viewpoint argues that while DP will influence software engineering and programming, its effects will be more incremental than the current hype suggests. To get away from the hype, I provide a careful analysis of the problem. I also argue that for DP to broaden its influence, it needs to take a more multidisciplinary approach, incorporating techniques from software engineering, program synthesis, and symbolic reasoning, to name just a few. Note I do not argue with the premise that DL will be used to solve many problems that are solved today by traditional programming methods and that software engineering will evolve to make such systems robust.17 In this Viewpoint, I am addressing the orthogonal question of using DL to synthesize programs themselves. ... Lauren Trees identifies trends in enterprise knowledge sharing and collaboration, researches cutting-edge ways to improve knowledge flow, and shares the findings with APQC’s members and the knowledge management community at large.

An unexpected upshot of the chaotic 2020s is that more leaders see the connection between knowledge management and business success. Well-documented and accessible knowledge helps get new hires up to speed, develop and engage employees throughout their careers, and spur the innovation needed to evolve and respond to change. Everyone is more aware of the importance of being nimble these days, along with the disasters that can ensue when tacit or explicit knowledge vanishes overnight. (To understand why knowledge continuity matters, look no further than Twitter under the control of Elon Musk. It turns out companies do need ready expertise to operate effectively.)

KM has gained ground, but new opportunities bring new challenges (along with some old ones). Below are three thoughts about where the discipline is headed in 2023 and what obstacles it may face. But my perspective may not match yours—that’s what makes life interesting! To help us see the future more clearly, please contribute your perspective by taking APQC’s 2023 Knowledge Management Trends and Predictions survey. We’ll share the results early next year.

1.    KM will continue to compete with digital workplace initiatives

When the pandemic took off, KM teams stepped into the breach to help organizations adapt to digital work. KMers overhauled intranets, stood up Microsoft Teams sites, piloted new apps, taught people how to use Zoom and Miro, and converted in-person trainings and events to virtual. This has been a double-edged sword. KM gained brand awareness and credibility by solving urgent problems, but some stakeholders got confused about KM’s scope and purpose along the way. 

Knowledge management plays an important role in the digital workplace, but KM is not just about managing cloud-based apps and repositories.  A good KM strategy involves identifying the organization’s critical knowledge and ensuring it gets both captured in systems and transferred among people. Content management and virtual collaboration can be gateway drugs to get the business hooked on KM, but KM needs to build on that foundation with strategic solutions to protect and replicate critical knowledge. Otherwise, it may get subsumed into digital initiatives that are more about the pipes than the knowledge running through them.

2.    In-context knowledge recommendations will become more mainstream

The holy grail of KM is to deliver relevant knowledge into employees’ hands when and where they need it, without them having to seek it out. Early adopters have been pursuing automated recommendations for nearly a decade, mostly by building or configuring software that uses information about a user—job role, current projects, communities, search history, digital interactions, and so on—to surface relevant information and expertise on personalized intranet pages, in team sites or work apps, or as alerts. These systems often delivered impressive results, but they were expensive and time-consuming to get right. Thus, the technology was limited to advanced KM programs in certain industries. 

Now, tools like Microsoft Viva Topics are embedding similar functionality into mainstream enterprise content and collaboration platforms. Viva Topics uses AI so that users can click a keyword in—for example—a Teams site and instantly see key documents and recommended experts related to that term. These tools are not perfect by any means, but they are likely to improve quickly, especially if IT teams turn them on and users engage with them. Inclusion in the big digital workplace platforms makes recommendations accessible to a much broader cross-section of organizations, but KM teams will have to scramble to incorporate the technology into their strategies and ensure it works as intended. A bad experience—where recommendations are inaccurate, overly complex, or off topic—will create clutter and frustrate users.  .... (more at link)... '

 Continuing to read Jane McGonigal's just published:  "Imaginable: How to see the Future Coming and feel ready for anything - even things that seem impossible today"    Had met her at a meeting some time ago and was impressed.   We were looking at how to integrate games with company process decisions.  I see she works with IFTF  , which we also worked with at the time. 

I like the use of fairly easy to understand process.

The World Ahead 2023: Grappling with an Unpredictable World

A few weeks ago, The Economist published “The World Ahead 2023”, its 37th annual year-end issue that examines the trends and events that will likely shape the coming year. Two years ago, “The World in 2021” said that we should expect unusual uncertainty in the coming year, given the interactions between the still flourishing covid-19 pandemic, an uneven economic recovery and fractious geopolitics. Last year, “The World Ahead 2022” said that 2022 would be a year of adjusting to new realities in areas like work and travel being reshaped by the pandemic, and as deeper trends like the rise of China and accelerating climate change reasserted themselves.

“After two years in which the pandemic was the force shaping the immediate future, the main driver now is the war in Ukraine,” said Tom Sandage, editor of the annual World Ahead annual issues. “In the coming months the world will have to grapple with unpredictability around the conflict’s impact on geopolitics and security; the struggle to control inflation; chaos in energy markets; and China’s uncertain post-pandemic path. To complicate matters further, all these things are tightly coupled, like an interlocking series of gear wheels.”

Longtermism

Longtermism is an ethical stance which gives priority to improving the long-term future. It is an important concept in effective altruism and serves as a primary motivation for efforts to reduce existential risks to humanity.[1]

Sigal Samuel from Vox summarizes the key argument for longtermism as follows: "future people matter morally just as much as people alive today; ... there may well be more people alive in the future than there are in the present or have been in the past; and ... we can positively affect future peoples' lives."[2] These three ideas taken together suggest, to those advocating longtermism, that it is the responsibility of those living now to ensure that future generations get to survive and flourish.[3]   .... '

Being Future Ready: From Security Awareness & Training To Adaptive Human Protection

In October 2022, Forrester’s Guide To Global SA&T Regulations And Standards revealed an impetus for a better future, and I shared with you all a sneak peak into the future of security awareness and training.

And today, I am THRILLED to finally announce to you the Future of Security Awareness and Training (Forrester clients can access here). The research examines the major expected changes in security awareness and training in the short, medium, and long term. Without further ado, here’s the situation:

In the long term, Adaptive Human Protection will create freedom for employees. A widely accepted cybersecurity mantra is that “Security is everyone’s responsibility” — but the goal of adaptive human protection is to move past that. This starts by instilling a security culture, eliminating needless compliance activity, and adding capabilities so humans will be hard-pressed to make wrong decisions. This allows you to imagine a future where you can safely jettison practices that were once required but are now superfluous. Once cybersecurity is no longer everyone’s responsibility, employees can get on with their daily activities and meet their digital aspirations while remaining protected from cyberthreats — even if they make a mistake.

The thing is, this future is realistically years in the future for most, so in the meanwhile, cue human risk management..

The medium-term focus on human risk management will overcome SA&T’s shortcomings. Make it the goal of the SA&T program to positively influence employee security behavior, instill a security culture, and manage human risk by taking six crucial steps: 1) expand your behavioral baseline beyond phishing and incidents; 2) measure effectiveness not completion; 3) quantify the human risk based on behavior (not scores!); 4) initiate real-time risk-based interventions; 5) if you must use content, be intentional and transformative; and 6) codify security culture.

 Now reading game designers Jane McGonigal's just published:  " Imaginable: How to see the Future Coming and feel ready for anything - even things that seem impossible today"    Had met her at a meeting some time ago and was impressed.   We were looking at how to integrate games with company process decisions.  I see she works with IFTF  , which we also worked with at the time.

Abstract

Advancing the spontaneous bottom-up construction of artificial cells with high organizational complexity and diverse functionality remains an unresolved issue at the interface between living and non-living matter1,2,3,4. Here, to address this challenge, we developed a living material assembly process based on the capture and on-site processing of spatially segregated bacterial colonies within individual coacervate microdroplets for the endogenous construction of membrane-bounded, molecularly crowded, and compositionally, structurally and morphologically complex synthetic cells. The bacteriogenic protocells inherit diverse biological components, exhibit multifunctional cytomimetic properties and can be endogenously remodelled to include a spatially partitioned DNA–histone nucleus-like condensate, membranized water vacuoles and a three-dimensional network of F-actin proto-cytoskeletal filaments. The ensemble is biochemically energized by ATP production derived from implanted live Escherichia coli cells to produce a cellular bionic system with amoeba-like external morphology and integrated life-like properties. Our results demonstrate a bacteriogenic strategy for the bottom-up construction of functional protoliving microdevices and provide opportunities for the fabrication of new synthetic cell modules and augmented living/synthetic cell constructs with potential applications in engineered synthetic biology and biotechnology.  ... The Book: Stories, Dice and Rocks that Think, by Byron Reese

 Completed reading ....  Recommended!  An excellent book that looks at a number of leaps of key technical history that have led us to today.   Should be read by everyone who seeks to understand the possibility and limits of our AI future.   A very nice positioning of how we got here, and the inherent challenges that are left.

Scientists at Austria's Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) and France's University of Rennes have enabled Wi-Fi signals to pass through walls more effectively. The method calculates an anti-reflective invisible structure to a wall, which TU Wien's Stefan Rotter likened to "the anti-reflective coating on your pair of glasses." The researchers transmitted microwaves through a labyrinth of obstacles, then calculated a matching anti-reflective structure that almost completely removed the signals' reflection. "We were able to show that this information can be used to calculate a corresponding compensating structure for any medium that scatters waves in a complex way, so that the combination of both media allows waves to pass through completely," explained TU Wien's Michael Horodynski.  ....

Future of Metaverse: An Interview with Matthew Ball

The leading metaverse theorist shares his thoughts on the sudden rise of the concept, its utility for the enterprise and what we still get wrong about the metaverse.

Talk to anyone in AR, VR or immersive entertainment about the metaverse, and they’ll sooner or later drop his name. Ball’s work has been hailed by Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Sweeney and Reed Hastings, just to name a few of his better-known fans, and his work has been called a must-read for anyone who wants to know about the next big thing.

The former Amazon Video executive-turned-VC began writing essays about the metaverse in early 2019. He has since become the leading theorist for the next version of the internet. His book, “The Metaverse And How It Will Revolutionize Everything,” is coming out this month, and Ball sat down with Protocol this week for a chat about all things metaverse.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

When you published your first essay about the metaverse in early 2019, it was still a pretty obscure concept. Two years later, Facebook changed its name to Meta, and everyone was talking about the metaverse. Did this pace of change surprise you?

Yes and no. I have never experienced a buzzword become as dominant as rapidly as the metaverse did. Seven of the 11 largest companies on earth have either renamed themselves, made the largest acquisitions in Big Tech history, reorganized or prepped their largest and most significant product launches in decades around this field. I think that's unprecedented. We've never seen a shift this enormous.

But the overall transition of investments and corporate strategy doesn't surprise me. When I started writing the piece based on my experiences in Fortnite and Roblox in 2018, you could feel that transformation happening. We know that in 2018, [Facebook gaming executive] Jason Rubin wrote an internal memo saying that the metaverse was theirs to lose. We know that in 2015, [Facebook] looked at buying Unity.

In 2015, Tim Sweeney was talking about the metaverse, and in 2016, he was warning of its extraordinary significance to civilization. This has been actively in investment for at least half a decade. The rise, though surprising, reflects how much was happening behind the scenes up until that moment.

How much did it matter that Facebook changed its name to Meta, and Zuckerberg identified the metaverse as the future of the company?

Having what was at the time the seventh largest company on earth say “this is our future” — and warning investors, signaling to partners, telling employees, telling prospective employees this was their future — was pretty extraordinary and forced everyone else to take it seriously.  ... '

Welcome to the post-Roe era of digital privacy, a moment that underscores how the use of technology has made it practically impossible for Americans to evade ubiquitous tracking.

In states that have banned abortion, some women seeking out-of-state options to terminate pregnancies may end up following a long list of steps to try to shirk surveillance — like connecting to the internet through an encrypted tunnel and using burner email addresses — and reduce the likelihood of prosecution.

Even so, they could still be tracked. Law enforcement agencies can obtain court orders for access to detailed information, including location data logged by phone networks. And many police departments have their own surveillance technologies, like license plate readers .... 

The state of digital privacy is already so far gone that forgoing the use of digital tools altogether may be the only way to keep information secure, security researchers said.

Scientists at Japan's Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) have developed a method for interacting with dynamic objects in augmented reality (AR), while reducing latency. Dynamic projection mapping combines cameras and projectors that respectively detect and project onto target surfaces, and the researchers' technique can calculate the intensity of each pixel on a target in parallel. This reduces the need for a single large optimization calculation, significantly boosting mapping speed and shortening latency. "The presented high-speed multi-projection is expected to be a major part of important base technologies that will advance spatial AR to derive more practical uses in our daily life," explained Tokyo Tech's Yoshihiro Watanabe. ....
