Investing in Replicate

It’s very rare to see a new building block emerge in computing. If aliens landed on earth and decompiled our software, every app would look roughly the same: some combination of networking, storage, and compute. The way developers consume these resources, and where they are housed, has of course changed dramatically over time. But the core concepts are as old as computing itself, dating back as far as the abacus (~2700 BCE), the Analytical Engine (1837), and the SAGE radar network (1950s).

Large AI models like Stable Diffusion and ChatGPT represent a fundamentally new building block. By integrating large models (LMs) into software, developers can expose functionality that wouldn’t be possible otherwise, including generating visual or text content, classifying existing content, and drawing semantic (rather than formal) connections in data. This may be one of the biggest changes in software we’ve ever seen — it’s not just running software on a new platform (e.g. a mobile device), but is a net new type of software.

The only problem is that LMs are still hard to use. Most developers are not machine learning engineers — globally, software engineers outnumber machine learning engineers by roughly two orders of magnitude (~30 million versus ~500,000). Large-scale pre-training has made AI dramatically more accessible, but software developers still face a series of hurdles (e.g. where to host models, what to do when they break, and how to build model differentiation over time) to get AI apps running in production, especially at scale.Clean abstractions and simple tools for LMs simply don’t exist. 

This is the problem Replicate aims to solve, by being something like the Vercel of machine learning. We’re excited to announce today that we are leading Replicate’s Series A round to help the company grow and achieve their vision to make AI usable at scale.

The core tenet of Replicate’s product is that all open source AI models should be available, and easy to use, in one place. Developers should be able to get up and running on LMs with zero machine learning work, hosting setup, or inscrutable Python/CUDA errors. It should be easy to compose several models into a pipeline. And, as apps scale up, developers should have access to simple tools for fine tuning and hosting their own models.

This is all possible because Replicate focuses only on developer experience and general abstractions — in contrast to model providers that are tied to single-model architectures and spend most of their resources to develop better models.

So far, Replicate has attracted thousands of active developers to the platform, many of them building visual generative AI apps. Some of the most sophisticated and well-known AI companies are using Replicate. We view this as early validation that even highly capable developers don’t want to reinvent the wheel, and that Replicate is building the right product for this audience.

The Replicate team is uniquely equipped to tackle this problem. Ben Firshman designed the first version of Docker Compose, a tool now used by millions of developers, and has a superpower for understanding developer experience. Andreas Jansson was a senior machine learning engineer at Spotify, where he deployed large-scale production AI models and designed new AI tooling from scratch. Together, they released Cog, a simple, container-based model packaging system that now powers Replicate.

Qiskit has already proven quite popular, with more than 600,000 installs, and when IBM Quantum and the Qiskit team hosted a quantum summer school last year, almost 5,000 developers participated.  ... Coders Flock Back to Crypto Projects with Prices Surging Again

Software developers are migrating back to cryptocurrency projects at record levels, with early-stage venture firm Electric Capital reporting that the numbers of new coders rose this year for more than three consecutive months for the first time since 2017. Electric estimated the number of new crypto developers grew 15% per month during the first 10 months of 2020, while more than 80% of all active developers began their work in the last two years. Open source blockchain platform Ethereum and decentralized finance applications are particularly attractive to developers. Electric's Maria Shen said, "Many projects like smart contract platforms rely on developers joining their ecosystem to be successful. Ethereum clearly has more activity and this is why other platforms fight for developers.”

Breaking Things Productively

Have never used Chaos engineering, but the idea is interesting. Second read about the concept:

More people connected to more servers, increased reliance on complex distributed networks, and a proliferation of apps in development mean more opportunities for data leaks and breaches.

Modern problems require modern solutions, as Amazon found out the hard way. Netflix escaped with minor inconvenience by being prepared.

What did they do differently?

Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon's cloud-based platform, experienced an outage on September 20, 2015, that crashed their servers for several hours and affected many vendors. Netflix experienced the issue as a blip because they've been there and done that when they changed their service delivery model. This led their engineering team to craft a unique solution for software production testing.

The solution? Chaos as a preventative for calamity. It's predicated on the idea of failure as the rule rather than the exception, and it led to the development of the first dedicated chaos engineering tools. Otherwise known as the Simian Army, they're called Chaos Monkey, Chaos Kong, and the newest member of the family, Chaos Automation Platform (ChAP).

Microsoft Applies AI to Developer Lifecycle

At its Build 2018 developer conference a year ago, Microsoft previewed Visual Studio IntelliCode, which uses AI to offer intelligent suggestions that improve code quality and productivity. In April, Microsoft launched Visual Studio 2019 for Windows and Mac. At that point, IntelliCode was still an optional extension that Microsoft was openly offering as a preview. But at Build 2019 earlier this month, Microsoft shared that IntelliCode’s capabilities are now generally available for C# and XAML in Visual Studio 2019 and for Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Python in Visual Studio Code. Microsoft also now includes IntelliCode by default in Visual Studio 2019. ....

Watson Assistant Produces a Chatbot

IBM has announced a means of chatbot development, via their Watson Assistant infrastructure.  Recall I beta-tested the Dev under Watson Assistant.  The offer here, as I read it, is a one year free supported trial to built a chatbot using this approach.  The precise meaning of the 'chatbot' here is unclear, but I would assume it includes access to current Watson Assistant services.  Such as emotion detection  (anger) mentioned below.  Retail is mentioned but seems not restrictively.  Limitations of memory and access interactions. Looks like a good thing to try.

Dash Buttons Open to Developers

Besides just buying things, how else might they be used?

If you're a regular Amazon shopper, you're probably aware of the virtual Dash buttons on the site's homepage. The site will auto-generate buttons that allow you to re-buy your most recently purchased items with one click. You can also create your own Dash buttons. Today, Amazon announced the Virtual Dash Button Service (VDBS), a developer kit that will allow third parties to create Dash buttons and display them inside their own devices with screens.

Amazon also announced that new companies have joined Dash Replenishment. The program measures the supply and use of consumables; when you're running out, it will automatically reorder more of whatever it is you're using. HP is now developing printers that automatically reorder ink, while 3M is working on air filters that can order their own replacements. Kenmore's new line of appliances will automatically reorder supplies, such as air filters and laundry detergent, while illy's new coffee maker (that is now available for purchase) will reorder capsules. ... "

Nice simple idea, not sure how rewards work, but could see this working among an enterprise team and getting some sort of reward points for helping. Could also push toward standard usage when developing.  Ultimately might be a way to integrate bot assistance.

Microsoft Expands Cognitive Services

I remain disappointed by the integration level of Cortana assistant with other MS services, but at least now Microsoft seems to be advancing on cognitive services.  Now developers can take the capabilities further.  Includes mention of their 'Build a Bot Strategy'.  But very little about Cortana itself, except as a front end.  Seems they are losing an AI opportunity here to Amazon and Google. Need a framework for assistants, and Microsoft has one of the most popular in Office.

Machine Learning for Programmers

May have mentioned this before, but here is a good post by Jason Brownlee.  Somewhat pictorial.   This takes it to a process 'how' level, but not all the way to coding itself.  The assumption is that you are a skilled developer/coder already and can adapt to the low level 'how' that is needed.

Note that being a developer is different from just knowing how to write code.  Its also integrating systems and data and understanding the process of design and delivery.   Especially of you plan to make this in any way an ongoing effort.   Worth scanning by managers too to understand what is involved, and what they need to hire.   But Jason makes a good point that this is very learn able, not math or stats magic.

Developers will also learn how to use data coming from the connected devices.
