Google AI Asssisted Note Taking gets Limited Launch

Google AI Asssisted Note Taking gets Limited Launch in Tech Crunch

Google is making its “AI notebook for everyone” available to a select few and renaming it from Project Tailwind to NotebookLM. If you struggle to make sense of the pile of information in your Google Drive, a light coating of AI could be just the thing.

The project was announced at I/O in May as a way for students to organize the various lecture notes and other documents they accumulate during coursework.

Unlike a generic chatbot that draws on a vast corpus of largely unrelated information, NotebookLM restricts (or attempts to restrict) itself to analyzing and answering questions about the documents it is fed. It will still draw on its broader knowledge if you require it to, but the general idea is that its first resort is to the information it has most recently been exposed to.

If you’re taking a class on Lord Byron and ask it what the significance was of his dying in Greece rather than England, it will first consult your notes and any supporting documents, and report from those. But if you don’t happen to have written down the date and location of his death (April 19, 1824, in Missolonghi, Greece), it can still fetch that information from elsewhere. (At least, this is how I understand the system to work in a general sense.)  ... '

Generative AI Tools Quickly 'Running Out of Text' to Train Themselves?

A Berkeley professor said AI's strategy behind training large language models is "starting to hit a brick wall."

OpenAI's ChatGPT is among many chatbots trained on large language models that may be "running out of text" to train on, said Stuart Russell, a computer science professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

ChatGPT and other AI-powered bots may soon be "running out of text in the universe" that trains them to know what to say, an artificial intelligence expert and professor at the University of California, Berkeley says.

Stuart Russell said that the technology that hoovers up mountains of text to train artificial intelligence bots like ChatGPT is "starting to hit a brick wall." In other words, there's only so much digital text for these bots to ingest, he told an interviewer last week from the International Telecommunication Union, a UN communications agency.

This may impact the way generative AI developers collect data and train their technologies in the coming years, but Russell still thinks AI will replace humans in many jobs that he characterized in the interview as "language in, language out."

Russell's predictions widen the growing spotlight being shone in recent weeks on the data harvesting conducted by OpenAI and other generative AI developers to train large language models, or LLMs.

3 ways AI is Already Transcending Hype and Delivering Tangible Results

3 ways AI is already transcending hype and delivering tangible results

Peter Evans, Xtract One Technologies    in Vneturebeat

@XtractOne, July 15, 2023 8:20 AM

Google search trends for AI have soared since the service launched, and companies are rushing to lap up domains from Anguilla, population 15,000, looking to benefit from its .ai domain registration.

At the same time, investors are pouring money into generative AI startups, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle and capitalize on this technology to find the next big tech breakthrough. As one AI investor recently told the New York Times, “We’re in that phase of the market where it’s, like, let 1,000 flowers bloom.”

Today, the hype cycle is so hot that even companies without legitimate AI credentials are trying to align themselves with the technology, prompting the Federal Trade Commission to issue a terse warning to companies: “If you think you can get away with baseless claims that your product is AI-enabled, think again.”

The hype cycle can be so ludicrous that Axios reporter Felix Salmon recently explained, “When a company starts talking loudly about its AI abilities, the first question should always be: “Why is this company talking loudly about its AI abilities?”

To be sure, this isn’t the first rodeo for AI speculation. The technology is more than half a century old, and it’s been through many boom and bust cycles that yielded significant technological advances but have continually failed to fully live up to the hype.

In other words, developing AI products and services that are repeatable, scalable and sellable has historically been difficult and often prohibitively expensive. However, by looking at the ways AI is already making the most significant impact, we can paint a clearer and possibly more accurate picture of what it will look like moving forward.

Here are three ways AI is impacting our world today, which can provide a useful roadmap for how it might actually change the world tomorrow.  ...  '

How Do We Know How Smart AI Systems Are?

In 1967, Marvin Minksy, a founder of the field of artificial intelligence (AI), made a bold prediction: "Within a generation…the problem of creating 'artificial intelligence' will be substantially solved." Assuming that a generation is about 30 years, Minsky was clearly overoptimistic. But now, nearly two generations later, how close are we to the original goal of human-level (or greater) intelligence in machines?

Some leading AI researchers would answer that we are quite close. Earlier this year, deep-learning pioneer and Turing Award winner Geoffrey Hinton told Technology Review, "I have suddenly switched my views on whether these things are going to be more intelligent than us. I think they're very close to it now and they will be much more intelligent than us in the future." His fellow Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio voiced a similar opinion in a recent blog post: "The recent advances suggest that even the future where we know how to build superintelligent AIs (smarter than humans across the board) is closer than most people expected just a year ago."

Jul 07, 2023,  By Guy Salton and Abhishek Sawarkar

Organizations are increasingly adopting hybrid and multi-cloud strategies to access the latest compute resources, consistently support worldwide customers, and optimize cost. However, a major challenge that engineering teams face is operationalizing AI applications across different platforms as the stack changes. This requires MLOps teams to familiarize themselves with different environments and developers to customize applications to run across target platforms.

NVIDIA offers a consistent, full stack to develop on a GPU-powered on-premises or on-cloud instance. You can then deploy that AI application on any GPU-powered platform without code changes.

Introducing the latest NVIDIA Virtual Machine Image

The NVIDIA Cloud Native Stack Virtual Machine Image (VMI) is GPU-accelerated. It comes pre-installed with Cloud Native Stack, which is a reference architecture that includes upstream Kubernetes and the NVIDIA GPU Operator. NVIDIA Cloud Native Stack VMI enables you to build, test, and run GPU-accelerated containerized applications orchestrated by Kubernetes.

The NVIDIA GPU Operator automates the lifecycle management of the software required to expose GPUs on Kubernetes. The Black Mirror plot about AI that worries actors

SAG strike 2023    By Shiona McCallum    BBC Technology reporter

Hollywood actors are striking for the first time in 43 years, bringing the American movie and television business to a halt, partly over fears about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI).

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) actors' union failed to reach an agreement in the US for better protections against AI for its members - and warned that "artificial intelligence poses an existential threat to creative professions" as it prepared to dig in over the issue.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the chief negotiator for the SAG-AFTRA union, criticised producers for their proposals over AI so far.

He said studios had asked for the ability to scan the faces of background artists for the payment of one day's work, and then be able to own and use their likeness "for the rest of eternity, in any project they want, with no consent and no compensation".

If that sounds like the plot of an episode of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror, that's because it is.

US media has been quick to point out that the recent series six episode "Joan Is Awful" sees Hollywood star Salma Hayek grapple with the discovery that her AI likeness can by used by a production company without her knowledge.... '

SAN CARLOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Integrated Biosciences, a biotechnology company combining synthetic biology and machine learning to target aging, in collaboration with researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, today announced results demonstrating the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to discover novel senolytic compounds, a class of small molecules under intense study for their ability to suppress age-related processes such as fibrosis, inflammation and cancer. A new publication authored by company founders in Nature Aging, “Discovering small-molecule senolytics with deep neural networks,” describes the AI-guided screening of more than 800,000 compounds to reveal three drug candidates with comparable efficacy and superior medicinal chemistry properties than those of senolytics currently under investigation.

“This research result is a significant milestone for both longevity research and the application of artificial intelligence to drug discovery,” said Felix Wong, Ph.D., co-founder of Integrated Biosciences and first author of the publication. “These data demonstrate that we can explore chemical space in silico and emerge with multiple candidate anti-aging compounds that are more likely to succeed in the clinic, compared to even the most promising examples of their kind being studied today.”

Senolytics are compounds that selectively induce apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in senescent cells that are no longer dividing. A hallmark of aging, senescent cells have been implicated in a broad spectrum of age-related diseases and conditions including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Despite promising clinical results, most senolytic compounds identified to date have been hampered by poor bioavailability and adverse side effects. Integrated Biosciences was founded in 2022 to overcome these obstacles, target other neglected hallmarks of aging, and advance anti-aging drug development more generally using artificial intelligence, synthetic biology and other next-generation tools.  ... YouTube is experimenting with AI-generated quizzes on its mobile app for iOS and Android devices, which are designed to help viewers learn more about a subject featured in an educational video. The feature will also help the video-sharing platform get a better understanding of how well each video covers a certain topic.

The AI-generated quizzes, which YouTube noted on its experiments page yesterday, are rolling out globally to a small percentage of users that watch “a few” educational videos, the company wrote. The quiz feature is only available for a select portion of English-language content, which will appear on the home feed as links under recently watched videos.

Not all of YouTube’s experiments make it to the platform, so it will be interesting to see if this one sticks around. We’re not sure how many people — especially if they’re no longer in school — want to take a quiz while they scroll through videos. ... '

The U.S. Department of Defense is testing five large language models (LLMs) as part of an effort to develop data integration and digital platforms for military use.

U.S. Air Force Col. Matthew Strohmeyer said one experiment using a LLM to perform a military task was "highly successful" and "very fast."

However, Strohmeyer said, "That doesn't mean it's ready for primetime right now."

The exercises involve feeding classified operational information into the LLMs, with the ultimate goal of using AI-enabled data in decision-making, sensors, and firepower.

Specifically, the LLMs are being tasked with helping plan a military response to an escalating global crisis, with a focus on the Indo-Pacific region.

AI Skills Intro by Ignacio de Gregorio

Some good thoughts on uses and direction.

The AI skills you MUST learn in 2023

Putting you ahead of the curve with real examples

By Ignacio de Gregorio

You won’t be substituted by AI, but you will be substituted by a human that knows how to leverage AI.

Same outcome, but a totally different course of action.

You shouldn’t fear AI by itself, but you should be shitting in your pants if you’ve seen ChatGPT and other Generative AI models and you haven’t started thinking how can you incorporate them into your daily work.

But you can start changing this as soon as… today, as the answer to this issue is known, and goes by the name of Prompting.

A skill so powerful that I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it becomes a standard requirement in job descriptions in almost every industry, and an insanely valuable competitive edge over others if you harness its power.

Embrace or die

Mckinsey, the most prestigious consulting company in the world, sometimes referred directly to as ‘the Firm’, categorized economic activity more than ten years ago into three categories: production, transactions, and interactions.

Finally exploring the unexplored

For production, we all know how machines and robots have completely revolutionized how we generate products, and AI has helped by making these processes more efficient.

With transactions, digitalization, and more specifically, automation with technologies like RPA, are making them a much more streamlined process, with AI enabling the automation of more complex processes.

But until now, interactions were an untouched economic activity for AI, as the results of applying AI in these cases were, well… mild.

Generative AI has completely changed that.

Now, companies are completely confident that AI is going to take over how humans interact with others and with machines, and are ready to fully embrace it.

Thus, if that fact becomes a competitive advantage for your career or a complete burden, will depend ultimately on your capacity to learn this key skill.

This one will hit you close

Let’s see some examples of what I mean:

Many writers, especially newspapers, are already generating a considerable part of their writings using AI and then editing it using humans.

Marketers are generating impressive copy using AI, or leveraging the model’s ample knowledge for idea brainstorming

Companies are already rethinking how ChatGPT can be used for the automation of complex tasks before considered impossible to automate, with action transformers already making an appearance

Companies are also studying ways to how ChatGPT can revolutionize customer service with tailored chatbot solutions

But Generative AI isn’t only impacting how humans perform their day-to-day work, it’s also going to impact how companies operate.

Internet-native companies will become AI-native

Microsoft, by acquiring a majority stake in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT or DALL-E, has recently announced the inclusion of ChatGPT into Azure, its cloud computing service.

This is a huge deal, as it allows any company using Microsoft’s cloud services to easily leverage ChatGPT into their systems.

But that isn’t enough for Microsoft.

They also are embedding ChatGPT into its search engine, Bing, and to all its Office365 software suite. Yes, your PowerPoints, Excels, or your Words, among others, will also leverage ChatGPT to enhance your experience.

Needless to say, ordinary people don’t realize what’s coming, and, for that reason, many of them will quickly miss this life-changing opportunity I’m presenting to you today.

Because striving for the continuous reinvention of your skills is a must in the tech-driven world we happen to live in.

You shouldn’t feel tempted to embrace AI, you should be feel forced to do so.

The impact of AI on our daily interactions will be so huge that lots of AI-based jobs will surge as demand for AI experts will soar.

And by experts I don’t mean AI researchers or scientists; simply people that have become experts in applying these technologies.

And that leads you to Prompting.

But what on Earth is this?

Learning to speak to AI

To understand how powerful a skill prompting will be, we need a quick summary of what Generative AI actually is.

AI is a transformer, but not the way you think it is

Generative AI models are models that, when receiving a text prompt, give an output related to that input, be that an image, written text, spectrograms, or others, depending on the use case.

These AI models, at least the most successful ones, fall into the category of Large Language Models, transformer models that use an attention mechanism to work.

In layman’s terms, these models are capable of understanding context from inputs in a much more efficient way using this attention mechanism, which allows them to understand the context and what parts of the input matter the most. This makes these models much more memory-efficient than past models.

But this raises a question. How do we teach context to AI models?

The answer to this question is text embeddings, the hidden power behind ChatGPT and other generative models.

AI Is Coming for Mathematics, Too

The New York Times

Siobhan Roberts, July 2, 2023

An artificial intelligence (AI)-driven transformation of mathematics looms, with former Google computer scientist Christian Szegedy forecasting computers will match or surpass human mathematicians' problem-solving ability by 2026. Terence Tao at the University of California, Los Angeles said mathematicians' concerns about AI potentially threatening mathematical aesthetics or their profession have emerged in the last several years. The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Jordan Ellenberg suggested AI gadgets could help optimize mathematicians' work. Microsoft's open source Lean proof assistant, which uses automated reasoning powered by AI, is drawing interest for its recent achievements, yet its frequent complaining of being unable to understand the mathematician's inputs makes research awkward. Geordie Williamson at Australia's University of Sydney said mathematicians and computer scientists should participate in discussions about AI's mathematical implications more aggressively.  ,,, '

How New AI tools can Transform Customer Engagement and Retention

Considering this, interesting?

How new AI tools can transform customer engagement and retention

Ryohei Fujimaki, dotData, July 8, 2023 8:20 AM   in Venturebeat.

As the cookieless future continues to gain momentum, the global digital advertising sector is experiencing a tectonic shift. Companies are being forced to reimagine the way they reach out to customers.

Online marketing has been dominated by third-party cookies — tracking codes posted on websites to extract users’ information — and data brokers who sell the information in bulk.

However, this multibillion-dollar business, perpetuated for decades, is now in checkmate by a perfect trifecta: new privacy laws, big tech restrictions, and global consumer privacy trends.

While the end of cookies is inevitable, businesses still struggle to find new advertising techniques. Statista’s January report reveals that 83% of marketers still depend on third-party cookies, spending $22 billion on this outdated technique in 2021.

In this report, we’ll dive into the complexities of digital advertising transformation and reveal how new technologies, machine learning (ML), and AI present new opportunities for the industry.

The challenges, risks and new trends of digital marketing

Using third-party data has become a high-stakes risk strategy. Companies that do not observe data privacy laws can face millions in fines for data breaches or misuse. For example, defying the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) can cost up to €20 million (about $21.7 million) or 4% of a company’s annual global turnover in 2023.

And the legal data landscape goes well beyond the GDPR; it is diverse, constantly evolving, and growing. From state laws like the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) to federal laws like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), businesses must identify which laws apply to their operation and know the risks.

The dangers of running third-party data campaigns do not end with courts. Brands that do not align with consumer expectations risk losing clients and business opportunities. A 2022 MediaMath survey revealed that 84% of consumers are more likely to trust brands that prioritize using personal information with a privacy-safe approach.

The issue is not new — privacy concerns have been growing for years. In 2019, Pew Research reported that 79% of Americans were “concerned about how companies use their data.” In 2023, privacy has become a top priority, and customers expect companies to protect their data. Failing to do so brings devaluation of brand perception and potential loss of customers and business partners.

The most significant barrier to third-party data is coming from online giants themselves. Companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft are leading the way towards ending cookies. Increasing restrictions make it harder for marketers to obtain consumers’ data daily.

First-party data — obtained under consent in a direct relationship with the user, for example, when making a payment transaction or agreeing to the terms when signing up — is trending and expected to replace third-party data. First-party data is also better-quality, as it goes beyond limited information based on age, location and gender. Furthermore, companies can use first-party data to create modern data marts. ... '
