Holographic Videoconferencing?

Long suggested, but still not here.   Some steps in the right direction described in Technology Review.  Is it really required to do rich communications?  I have been of the opinion that it is necessary only if you need to share very detailed representations of something that needs to be shared in real time.   I might change that view if I could experience it.
