Babies Conceived with Sperm-Injecting Robot Have Been Born By MIT Technology Review, May 9, 2023
Some startups are saying the in vitro fertilization process could be carried out automatically, or nearly so.
Scientists claim the first two babies conceived by a sperm-injecting robot have been born.
The robot integrates a microscope, mechanized needle, petri dish, and laptop; an engineer used a Sony PlayStation 5 controller to manipulate the needle to human ova so it could deliver its sperm payload. Spain-based robot developer and startup Overture Life described the device as an initial step toward automated in vitro fertilization.
A half-dozen startups are pursuing similar goals in order to produce more babies, according to entrepreneurs.
Gianpiero Palermo at Weill Cornell Medical Center said Overture Life's accomplishment is only one step toward automated intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
