Baidu Unveils Generative AI Ernie Bot With Pre-Recorded Videos, Disappointing Investors,

Baidu introduced its generative Ernie Bot in a series of video presentations that promised a lot of features without actually demonstrating them live. The scripted nature of the event led to a brief dip of its Hong Kong shares by nearly 10%, though planning ahead did ensure Baidu avoided a gaffe like the incorrect answer to a question produced by the Google Bard generative AI chatbot when it was first revealed last month.

BAIDU ERNIE BOT

Baidu CEO Robin Li introduced Ernie, which stands for Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration, at the event. He played several videos showing Ernie performing math, generating images and videos from text prompts, and speaking in multiple Chinese dialects. The AI performed flawlessly in the video, but investors were apparently eager to see how it would perform in the wild, leading to the stock dip. Ernie is not widely available, with only those who received invitation codes from Baidu able to interact with the bot. Companies interested in employing Ernie for enterprise purposes must apply for the chance to link their software to Baidu’s cloud platform hosting the AI model.

Li admitted that Ernie is still not perfect, which might be why the company went for videos over live demonstrations. Li said Ernie had to be released “because the market demands it.” That seems to be backed up if Baidu’s boast of 650 companies in the Ernie ecosystem and 30,000 corporate user applications are to be believed.

Despite investor disappointment, Baidu has been working toward conversational generative AI for some time. The company has engaged in AI research for all kinds of products, including a virtual human named Xijiajia capable of painting a picture of a cat upon request. Xijiajia is Baidu’s digital human ambassador, one of several such virtual beings produced by Baidu, including the “interactive virtual idol” DuXiaoxiao. Some of the demand may also be a result of restrictions on American generative AI chatbots. Chinese social media platform WeChat banned ChatGPT last year, and strict rules on deepfakes have set up a potentially tricky regulatory system for any AI that can mimic specific people’s way of talking.

“Baidu envisions a future where we join forces with all to drive the evolution of AI, empowering every individual with access to state-of-the-art productivity tools and ensuring that the benefits of these advancements are shared by all,” Li said in a statement.  ...

Colleges and universities have been reluctant to ban the new chatbot because administrators doubt the move would be effective.

While grading essays for his world religions course last month, Antony Aumann, a professor of philosophy at Northern Michigan University, read what he said was easily "the best paper in the class." It explored the morality of burqa bans with clean paragraphs, fitting examples and rigorous arguments.

A red flag instantly went up.

Mr. Aumann confronted his student over whether he had written the essay himself. The student confessed to using ChatGPT, a chatbot that delivers information, explains concepts and generates ideas in simple sentences — and, in this case, had written the paper.

Tools for Spotting Bots

 Question I just asked, how easy and accurate is it to spot bots?  Got a first answer ... that it depends, but for now skepticism is best, and consider the specific risk involved.

Skepticism is an important detection method for AI-generated content.

Researchers are developing tools that can identify content created by bots like OpenAI's ChatGPT, which generates text that can be difficult to distinguish from works created by humans. These bot-detection tools come amid concerns that students could use ChatGPT to pass off artificial intelligence (AI)-generated essays as their own work and that workers could use such tools as shortcuts.

GPTZero, developed by Princeton University student Edward Tian, assesses text to determine the likelihood of it being AI-generated. Irene Solaiman of Hugging Face, a company that offers a similar tool, says signs of repetition or inaccuracies also can help spot AI-generated content. "Sometimes you can tell with a language model that it's misunderstanding modern data, misunderstanding time frames," Solaiman says.

Meanwhile, the Detect Fakes project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, provides an exercise to help users identify "deepfakes." However, as AI advances, these tools must be updated.

Christopher Bouzy is trying to stay ahead of the bots. As the person behind Bot Sentinel, a popular bot-detection system, he and his team continuously update their machine learning models out of fear that they will get "stale." The task? Sorting 3.2 million tweets from suspended accounts into two folders: "Bot" or "Not."

To detect bots, Bot Sentinel's models must first learn what problematic behavior is through exposure to data. And by providing the model with tweets in two distinct categories—bot or not a bot—Bouzy's model can calibrate itself and allegedly find the very essence of what, he thinks, makes a tweet problematic.

Training data is the heart of any machine learning model. In the burgeoning field of bot detection, how bot hunters define and label tweets determines the way their systems interpret and classify bot-like behavior. According to experts, this can be more of an art than a science. "At the end of the day, it is about a vibe when you are doing the labeling," Bouzy says. "It's not just about the words in the tweet, context matters." ...

Before anyone can hunt bots, they need to figure out what a bot is—and that answer changes depending on who you ask. ....

The company reduced operational costs by 51%. These cost improvements saved them over $1 billion.

They released 25% of their operational team’s capacity, some of whom were redirected to work in their newly established Robotic Center of Excellence unit.

Paying claims now takes one week compared to the industry average of 50 days.

Processing policy transactions was reduced from 4-5 hours to 40-80 minutes.

Healthcare

The healthcare industry is adopting AI technology to more efficiently manage the vast amounts of data it collects and accesses. For example, every disease and medication is assigned a medical code. That’s thousands of codes that follow a patient’s journey from diagnosis and treatment to insurance claims and billing.

Bots are being used to automate many administrative processes and improve patient care. AI chatbots can help patients look up symptoms or medication side effects, speak to medical professionals and schedule medical appointments.

Voice-recognition virtual assistants can assist administrative and medical staff to retrieve patient information, medical codes and other data by simply speaking to it. Doctors and nurses can cut the amount of time they spend documenting patient interaction with speech-to-text transcription software.

Bots can also be used by patients to manage their health. By downloading a health app on their smartphone, a patient can track their health data such as blood pressure, diet, exercise and sleep patterns. Apps can also be used to remind patients with chronic conditions to take their medication on time.

Customer Service

Chatbot software has become an integral part of customer service. Customers want immediate solutions to their problems and online chatbots can provide it. As a result, consumers have embraced chatbots.

Statistics show that 67% of customers have used a chatbot in the last year and 69% prefer using chatbots because they can provide quick answers to simple queries. This means your human agents can focus on assisting customers with more complex issues.

Chatbots are a type of conversational AI and are not to be confused with Live Chat, which uses a human agent.

Chatbot software is becoming increasingly advanced, capable of handling queries from initial query through to resolution. However, chatbots are not meant to replace human agents and should offer the customer the option of speaking to a human customer support agent.  .... '

Automation Anywhere Digital Assistant lets humans and Bots Interact

Seems quite an advance, allowing Bots and Humans to effectively Interact.  But we did a similar thing when we allowed our Mr. Clean bots to talk to human experts, designated as a 'concierge' for key and often narrow expertise.  The details about how such interaction, based on context will evolve, will be important.   People change differently than bots over time.   Will be looking at this much more closely.

Automation Anywhere Inc. today debuted AARI, a digital assistant that will enable workers to interact with the robotic process automation bots used by their company and give them instructions.  AARI was announced during Automation Anywhere’s virtual Innovation Day event. 

Robotic process automation, or RPA, is a fast-growing category of software products designed to streamline manual back-office tasks such as data entry. Automation Anywhere is one of the leading players in the segment. It received a $6.8 billion valuation last November after raising a $290 million round led by Salesforce Ventures. 

Automation Anywhere’s RPA platform works by observing how employees perform a given task inside a business application and capturing their workflow. Then, the platform turns the workflow into a bot, a software agent that can perform the same task without any human input. Employees are thereby freed up to focus on more important work, while the chore that was automated can be performed more efficiently and with a lower risk of errors.

AARI, the digital assistant announced today, takes the concept a step further. Companies now can create bots not only to automate repetitive manual tasks but also to give their employees the ability to interact with those bots and harness them to make their own work easier.

A video on Automation Anywhere’s website provides an overview of some of the ways AARI can be used. An employee could ask a bot if they have any urgent emails and receive a natural-language response detailing the number of time-sensitive messages in their inbox, as well as how soon they require a reply. Workers can also ask bots to perform more complex tasks, such as sending an invoice to the accounting department for approval or verifying a customer’s postal address.

On launch, AARI includes a text-based “bot-to-human” interface for interacting with bots. Automation Anywhere plans to add a voice interface in the future to provide a user experience similar to that offered by consumer digital assistants such as Alexa or Siri.      .... "

Our horrible attention spans distinguish us from bots, according to a new study   of human and fake accounts on Twitter.

Researchers from the University of Southern California made the discovery after analyzing activity patterns in two Twitter datasets.

The first was a set of posts about the 2017 French presidential election. The second was a collection of tweets by bots and human accounts that had already been hand-labeled.

They chose these two datasets because they complement each other: The human-labeled accounts reliably differentiated between humans and bots, while the French election tweets offered more contextual insights.

The researchers then analyzed their behaviors by studying the lengths of tweets and the number of retweets, replies, and mentions they attracted.  ... "

Bot Activity During Coronavirus

Don't know what to fully make of this.    How accurate is the machine learning of the model working to identify bots?.  Looking for the Carnegie piece supporting this to get an idea.  Here is one CMU article which covers the research.

Researchers: Nearly Half Of Accounts Tweeting About Coronavirus Are Likely Bots   By Bobby Allyn

Computer scientists at Carnegie Mellon University have determined that nearly half of all Twitter accounts spreading messages about the COVID-19 pandemic are likely bots. The team analyzed more than 200 million tweets discussing the virus since January, and found about 45% were sent by accounts that behave more like computerized bots than humans. In addition, the researchers identified more than 100 false narratives about the novel coronavirus that bot-controlled accounts are spreading on the platform. The researchers used a bot-hunter tool to flag accounts that post messages more often than is humanly possible, or which claim to be in multiple countries within a period of a few hours. Said Carnegie Mellon researcher Kathleen Carley, "We're seeing up to two times as much bot activity as we'd predicted based on previous natural disasters, crises, and elections."   ... '

How quickly can we create and deliver these kinds of context specific examples for epidemics will be important.   Here the Microsoft example looks very interesting.  Can it learn and adapt to new contexts as they emerge?     Make predictions of new goal states?   Evaluate risks based on human reactions and predict results over time?  See below:

It's good to be skeptical of Wikipedia articles for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the possibility of outdated info -- human editors can only do so much. And while there are bots that can edit Wikipedia, they're usually limited to updated canned templates or fighting vandalism. MIT might have a more useful (not to mention more elegant) solution. Its researchers have developed an AI system that automatically rewrites outdated sentences in Wikipedia articles while maintaining a human tone. .... '

Bots that Make the Wikipedia Work

Quite instructive and interesting look at behind the scenes at the WP.  I can see this same approach being used for some things we tried to do with enterprise level knowledge.   I note that often when I make a positive point about the WP  I get negative responses.   It 'lies, deceives, steals, can't be trusted ...'     And yes, like everything on the internet is use must be carefully considered, based on use context.  Its flawed, contains opinion, as all writing does.  Yet I don't know of anyone who does not use it.   Wikipedia is now 19 years old, and I remember using it very early on.

Bush took office), Wikipedia’s promise of a collaborative encyclopedia has, today, resulted in a resource consisting of more than 40 million articles in 300 different languages, catering to an audience of 500 million monthly users. The English language Wikipedia alone adds some 572 new articles per day.

For anyone who has ever browsed the comments section on a YouTube video, the fact that Wikipedia’s utopian vision of crowdsourced collaboration has been even remotely successful is kind of mind-boggling. It’s a towering achievement, showing how humans from around the globe can come together to create something that, despite its flaws, is still impressively great.

Bots Work Better if they Impersonate

Interesting results, with shades of the implications of 'uncanny valley' and the need to define 'success' in strong context.   Our guard is already up now when we 'meet' bots online.   Expectations are set depending up this context.  'Prisoners Dilemma' context is interesting to test, but is it often a context that humans encounter?   We do now need to know much better how humans work with machines.

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, along with colleagues in the U.S. and the United Arab Emirates, found that bots are more successful at certain human-machine interactions, but only if they are allowed to hide their non-human identity.

The researchers asked nearly 700 volunteers in an online cooperation game to interact with a human or an artificial partner. In the game, known as the prisoner's dilemma, players can either act in their own self-interest to exploit the other player, or act cooperatively with advantages for both sides. However, some of the participants interacting with another human were told they were playing with a bot, and vice versa.

The researchers found that bots impersonating humans were more successful in convincing their gaming partners to cooperate. However, as soon as they revealed their true identity, cooperation rates decreased.

Considering Duplex. Block or Receive with a Bot?

Good piece in the Verge about Google Duplex.   And how businesses can opt out of incoming calls from it.  Duplex lets you set up a kind of  agent with a script to do tasks.   An example to start with could be making a reservation at a restaurant.   Another might be asking if a particular product is in stock at a location.   Or asking for information about the status of an order.   All with voice interaction. As I understand it the calling agent will always identify itself as an AI.  The fear is that this may get out of hand and these will turn into artificially  generated bot  'robocalls' and tie up the time of small business.  Ultimately too, the receiving call could also be handled by an agent.    In a sense either side of call could be either a bot agent or a person.  Good detail in the article linked to:

 In the past year, you have most likely read a story that was written by a bot. Whether it’s a sports article, an earnings report or a story about who won the last congressional race in your district, you may not have known it but an emotionless artificial intelligence perhaps moved you to cheers, jeers or tears. By 2025, a bot could be writing 90% of all news, according to Narrative Science, whose software Quill turns data into stories.

Many of the largest and most reputable news outlets in the world are using or dabbling in AI — such as The Washington Post, The Associated Press, BBC, Reuters, Bloomberg, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Times and Sunday Times (U.K.), Japan’s national public broadcaster, NHK, and Finland’s STT. Last year, China’s Xinhua News Agency created the world’s first AI-powered news anchor, a male, using computer graphics. This year, it debuted the first AI female news anchor.

Even smaller outlets are publishing AI-written stories if they subscribe to services that create them, such as the AP and RADAR, which stands for Reporters And Data And Robots. A joint venture of the U.K. Press Association and tech firm Urbs Media, RADAR is an AI-powered news agency that generates thousands of local stories per week for U.K. media outlets that subscribe. Globally, a survey of nearly 200 top editors, CEOs and digital leaders showed that nearly three-quarters are already using AI, according to a 2018 report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. .... Creating Books from Wikipedia with Wiki-Book Bot

We tested a similar approach in-house, meant to combine public and internal knowledge.   There were of course gripes about both the reliability, completeness of the Wikipedia, and how well the internal sources had been maintained.  The automation did provide a means to quickly understand what we had, and needed to still get.    Good details at the top level article .... more technical at arXiv linked to below.
