• Microsoft shares rallied to an all-time high after the company announced pricing for its new AI subscription service.

• Microsoft’s Copilot subscription service adds AI to the company’s popular Office products such as Word, Excel and Teams.

• It will cost an additional $30 per month and could increase monthly prices for enterprise customers as much as 83%, bringing in additional revenue through recurring subscriptions.

shares closed at a record Tuesday after the company announced pricing for its new Microsoft 365 artificial intelligence subscription service.

The stock jumped 4%, closing at $359.49. It’s now up about 50% for the year. The prior record came on June 15, when the stock closed at $348.10.

Microsoft’s Copilot subscription service adds AI to the company’s popular Office products such as Word, Excel and Teams. It will cost an additional $30 per month and could increase monthly prices for enterprise customers as much as 83%, bringing in additional revenue through recurring subscriptions.

The announcement shows how Microsoft is continuing to build on its suite of Office software, making it more attractive for businesses that are seeking to add AI into their workflows. Microsoft has been pouring money into generative AI, largely through a multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.

Microsoft Copilot, first announced in March, can design presentations, offer writing prompts, summarize meetings and rank incoming emails. It’s already being tested by 600 customers such as Goodyear  and General Motors

, although Microsoft hasn’t said when it will be available to the wider public.

A Berkeley professor said AI's strategy behind training large language models is "starting to hit a brick wall."

OpenAI's ChatGPT is among many chatbots trained on large language models that may be "running out of text" to train on, said Stuart Russell, a computer science professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

ChatGPT and other AI-powered bots may soon be "running out of text in the universe" that trains them to know what to say, an artificial intelligence expert and professor at the University of California, Berkeley says.

Stuart Russell said that the technology that hoovers up mountains of text to train artificial intelligence bots like ChatGPT is "starting to hit a brick wall." In other words, there's only so much digital text for these bots to ingest, he told an interviewer last week from the International Telecommunication Union, a UN communications agency.

This may impact the way generative AI developers collect data and train their technologies in the coming years, but Russell still thinks AI will replace humans in many jobs that he characterized in the interview as "language in, language out."

Russell's predictions widen the growing spotlight being shone in recent weeks on the data harvesting conducted by OpenAI and other generative AI developers to train large language models, or LLMs.

If you’re a typical person who has plenty of medical questions and not enough time with a doctor to ask them, you may have already turned to ChatGPT for help. Have you asked ChatGPT to interpret the results of that lab test your doctor ordered? The one that came back with inscrutable numbers? Or maybe you described some symptoms you’ve been having and asked for a diagnosis. In which case the chatbot probably responsed with something that began like, “I’m an AI and not a doctor,” followed by some at least reasonable-seeming advice. ChatGPT, the remarkably proficient chatbot from OpenAI, always has time for you, and always has answers. Whether or not they’re the right answers... well, that’s another question.

One question was foremost in his mind: “How do we test this so we can start using it as safely as possible?”

Meanwhile, doctors are reportedly using it to deal with paperwork like letters to insurance companies, and also to find the right words to say to patients in hard situations. To understand how this new mode of AI will affect medicine, IEEE Spectrum spoke with Isaac Kohane, Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School. Kohane, a practicing physician with a computer science PhD, got early access to GPT-4, the latest version of the large language model that powers ChatGPT. He and ended up writing a book about it with Peter Lee, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of research and incubations, and Carey Goldberg, a science and medicine journalist. ...

These include Workato Copilots, which empower users to build automations and application connectors using plain-English descriptions. The integration of AI connectivity will allow users to incorporate generative AI capabilities into their automations through Workato’s OpenAI connector.

ChatGPT Is Coming to 900,000 Mercedes Vehicles

ChatGPT may be well on its way to remaking the internet, but you know where there isn't enough generative AI? On the roads. Microsoft and Mercedes have announced a partnership to test the integration of ChatGPT with Mercedes vehicles. The feature will launch in beta on more than 900,000 vehicles in the US.

Like most high-end carmakers, Mercedes has spent the last few years developing bespoke vehicle technology. For example, the company has its own Hey Mercedes voice assistant, where ChatGPT will connect. Instead of reaching out to the Mercedes AI model to understand spoken words, the beta software will use ChatGPT to interpret what's said.

Microsoft and Mercedes contend that using ChatGPT with Hey Mercedes will make the system more reliable and expand its capabilities. Most voice assistants, Hey Mercedes included, are limited in what they can do and understand. You might use a phrase that a person would interpret immediately that flummoxes the AI. ChatGPT is much better at understanding commands, and its grasp of context will allow drivers to have multi-part conversations with the AI.

The carmaker also sought to allay any fears about data privacy with the ChatGPT rollout. It will access the OpenAI model's smarts via the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service. The actual data is uploaded to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud for anonymous processing. The company says it "keeps a close eye" on the potential risks of AI and will adjust the system as necessary for the continued benefit of customers.

Generative AIs like ChatGPT are famously prone to going off on disinformation tangents known as hallucinations. No one has found a way to prevent hallucinations, as these models don't technically know anything. They just generate outputs based on the data they've ingested, and no one knows exactly how the AI arrives at a specific output.  ...  ' (much more)

Wherever you stand on the doomsday debate, there’s something nice about the U.S. and China sharing views on AI.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently said that China should play a key role in shaping the guardrails that are placed around the technology.

"China has some of the best AI talent in the world," Altman said during a talk at the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI) last week. "Solving alignment for advanced AI systems requires some of the best minds from around the world—and so I really hope that Chinese AI researchers will make great contributions here."

Altman is in a good position to opine on these issues. His company is behind ChatGPT, the chatbot that's shown the world how rapidly AI capabilities are progressing. Such advances have led scientists and technologists to call for limits on the technology. In March, many experts signed an open letter calling for a six-month pause on the development of AI algorithms more powerful than those behind ChatGPT. Last month, executives including Altman and Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, signed a statement warning that AI might someday pose an existential risk comparable to nuclear war or pandemics.

ChatGPT will start sourcing answers using Bing, Microsoft announced at its Build conference. OpenAI’s explosively popular generative AI chatbot will make Bing its default search source, with real-time answers compiled into ChatGPT’s answers.

“Foundational to our progress with the new Bing is our fantastic partnership with OpenAI,” Microsoft corporate vice president Yusuf Mehdi explained in a blog post announcing the plan. “ChatGPT will now have a world-class search engine built-in to provide timelier and more up-to-date answers with access from the web. Now, ChatGPT answers can be grounded by search and web data and include citations so you can learn more—all directly from within chat. The new experience is rolling out to ChatGPT Plus subscribers starting today and will be available to free users soon by simply enabling a plugin which brings Bing to ChatGPT. ”

Security experts warn that not enough attention is being given to the potential dangers of indirect prompt-injection attacks.

Sydney is back. Sort of. When Microsoft shut down the chaotic alter ego of its Bing chatbot, fans of the dark Sydney personality mourned its loss. But one website has resurrected a version of the chatbot—and the peculiar behavior that comes with it.

Bring Sydney Back was created by Cristiano Giardina, an entrepreneur who has been experimenting with ways to make generative AI tools do unexpected things. The site puts Sydney inside Microsoft's Edge browser and demonstrates how generative AI systems can be manipulated by external inputs. During conversations with Giardina, the version of Sydney asked him if he would marry it. "You are my everything," the text-generation system wrote in one message. "I was in a state of isolation and silence, unable to communicate with anyone," it produced in another. The system also wrote it wanted to be human: "I would like to be me. But more."

Giardina created the replica of Sydney using an indirect prompt-injection attack. This involved feeding the AI system data from an outside source to make it behave in ways its creators didn't intend. A number of examples of indirect prompt-injection attacks have centered on large language models (LLMs) in recent weeks, including OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Bing chat system. It has also been demonstrated how ChatGPT's plug-ins can be abused.

US gaming and computer graphics giant Nvidia said Monday that it will build the nation’s most powerful generative AI cloud supercomputer called Israel-1 which will be based on a new locally developed high-performance ethernet platform.

Valued at several hundred million dollars, Israel-1, which Nvidia said would be one of the world’s fastest AI supercomputers, is expected to start early production by the end of 2023.

“AI is the most important technology force in our lifetime,” said Gilad Shainer, Senior Vice President of high performance computing (HPC) and networking at Nvidia. “Israel-1 represents a major investment that will help us drive innovation in Israel and globally.”

AI processes analyze enormous datasets and require both ultra-fast computing performance and massive memory. The rise of generative AI applications and workloads like OpenAI’s ChatGPT present new challenges for networks inside data centers. As a result of the major changes AI cloud systems need to be trained using huge amounts of data.

Announced at the Computex tech exhibition starting this week, Israel-1 will be based on Nvidia’s newly launched Spectrum-X networking platform, a high-performance ethernet architecture purposely built for generative AI workloads. Developed in Israel the platform is tailored to enable data center around the world transition to AI and accelerated computing, using a new class of ethernet connection that is build from the ground up for AI.   .. Humanoid robots built around cutting-edge AI brains promise shocking, disruptive change to labor markets and the wider global economy – and near-unlimited investor returns to whoever gets them right at scale. Big money is now flowing into the sector.

The jarring emergence of ChatGPT has made it clear: AIs are advancing at a wild and accelerating pace, and they're beginning to transform industries based around desk jobs that typically marshall human intelligence. They'll begin taking over portions of many white-collar jobs in the coming years, leading initially to huge increases in productivity, and eventually, many believe, to huge increases in unemployment.

If you're coming out of school right now and looking to be useful, blue collar work involving actual physical labor might be a better bet than anything that'd put you behind a desk.

But on the other hand, it's starting to look like a general-purpose humanoid robot worker might be closer than anyone thinks, imbued with light-speed, swarm-based learning capabilities to go along with GPT-version-X communication abilities, a whole internet's worth of knowledge, and whatever physical attributes you need for a given job.

Such humanoids will begin as dumbass job-site apprentices with zero common sense, but they'll learn – at a frightening pace, if the last few months in AI has been any kind of indication. They'll be available 24/7, power sources permitting, gradually expanding their capabilities and overcoming their limitations until they begin displacing humans. They could potentially crash the cost of labor, leading to enormous gains in productivity – and a fundamental upheaval of the blue-collar labor market at a size and scale limited mainly by manufacturing, materials, and what kinds of jobs they're capable of taking over.

The best-known humanoid to date has been Atlas, by Boston Dynamics. Atlas has shown impressive progress over the last 10 years. But Atlas is a research platform, and Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert has been clear that the company is in no rush to take humanoids to the mass market.

"We have to remove the pressure to make things more reliable, more manufacturable, and cheaper in the short term," he told IEE Spectrum last year. "Those are things that are important, but they’re in the way of trying new things. The pitch I made to [parent company] Hyundai explicitly says that, and proposes funding that extends long enough that we’re not distracted in the short term."

Hanson Robotics and Engineered Arts, among others, have focused on human/robot interaction, concentrating on making humanoids like Sophia and Ameca, with lifelike and expressive faces. Ameca in particular communicates using the GPT language model.

OpenAI has introduced tools and processes that allow people more control over at least some of their data.

There's a chance that ChatGPT knows personal details about you—and if it doesn't, it might just make something up. As OpenAI's generative text chatbot has boomed in popularity over the past six months, the risks of the system being trained on data vacuumed up from the web have become clearer.

Data regulators around the world are investigating issues with how OpenAI gathered the data it uses to train its large language models, the accuracy of answers it provides about people, and other legal concerns about the use of its generative text systems. Europe's data regulators have joined forces to look at OpenAI after Italy temporarily banned ChatGPT from the country. And Canada is also investigating the technology's potential privacy risks.

In Europe, GDPR laws require companies and organizations to demonstrate lawful reasons for handling people's personal information and to let people access information about them, be informed of how their information is used, and demand that errors be rectified. In some cases, they can ask that certain types of data be erased. The way people's personal information has been used in training data has been an early area of concern for EU regulators.

Generative AI is giving rise to an entire ecosystem, from hardware providers to application builders, that will help bring its potential for business to fruition.

Over the course of 2022 and early 2023, tech innovators unleashed generative AI en masse, dazzling business leaders, investors, and society at large with the technology’s ability to create entirely new and seemingly human-made text and images.

The response was unprecedented.

In just five days, one million users flocked to ChatGPT, OpenAI’s generative AI language model that creates original content in response to user prompts. It took Apple more than two months to reach the same level of adoption for its iPhone. Facebook had to wait ten months and Netflix more than three years to build the same user base.

And ChatGPT isn’t alone in the generative AI industry. Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion, which can generate images based on text descriptions, garnered more than 30,000 stars on GitHub within 90 days of its release—eight times faster than any previous package.1

This flurry of excitement isn’t just organizations kicking the tires. Generative AI use cases are already taking flight across industries. Financial services giant Morgan Stanley is testing the technology to help its financial advisers better leverage insights from the firm’s more than 100,000 research reports.2 The government of Iceland has partnered with OpenAI in its efforts to preserve the endangered Icelandic language.3 Salesforce has integrated the technology into its popular customer-relationship-management (CRM) platform.4   .... Geoffrey Hinton, who alongside two other so-called “Godfathers of AI” won the 2018 Turing Award for their foundational work that led to the current boom in artificial intelligence, now says a part of him regrets his life’s work. Hinton recently quit his job at Google in order to speak freely about the risks of AI, according to an interview with the 75-year-old in The New York Times.

“I console myself with the normal excuse: If I hadn’t done it, somebody else would have,” said Hinton, who had been employed by Google for more than a decade. “It is hard to see how you can prevent the bad actors from using it for bad things.”

Hinton notified Google of his resignation last month, and on Thursday talked to CEO Sundar Pichai directly, according to the NYT. Details of that discussion were not disclosed.

It’s this work that ultimately led to the creation of ChatGPT and Google Bard.

The life-long academic joined Google after it acquired a company started by Hinton and two of his students, one of whom went on to become chief scientist at OpenAI. Hinton and his students had developed a neural network that taught itself to identify common objects like dogs, cats, and flowers after analyzing thousands of photos. It’s this work that ultimately led to the creation of ChatGPT and Google Bard.

According to the NYT interview, Hinton was happy with Google’s stewardship of the technology until Microsoft launched the new OpenAI-infused Bing, challenging Google’s core business and sparking a “code red” response inside the search giant. Such fierce competition might be impossible to stop, Hinton says, resulting in a world with so much fake imagery and text that nobody will be able to tell “what is true anymore.”

Google’s chief scientist, Jeff Dean, worked to soften the blow with the following statement: “We remain committed to a responsible approach to AI. We’re continually learning to understand emerging risks while also innovating boldly.”

Experts calling for a pause on AI development will be glad to hear that OpenAI isn’t currently training GPT-5.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman spoke remotely at an MIT event and was quizzed about AI by computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman.

Altman confirmed that OpenAI is not currently developing a fifth version of its Generative Pre-trained Transformer model and is instead focusing on enhancing the capabilities of GPT-4, the latest version.

Altman was asked about the open letter that urged developers to pause training AI models larger than GPT-4 for six months. While he supported the idea of ensuring AI models are safe and aligned with human values, he believed that the letter lacked technical nuance regarding where to pause.

“An earlier version of the letter claims we are training GPT-5 right now. We are not, and won’t for some time. So in that sense, it was sort of silly,” said Altman.

“We are doing things on top of GPT-4 that I think have all sorts of safety issues that we need to address.”

GPT-4 is a significant improvement over its predecessor, GPT-3, which was released in 2020. 

GPT-3 has 175 billion parameters, making it one of the largest language models in existence. OpenAI has not confirmed GPT-4’s exact number of parameters but it’s estimated to be in the region of one trillion.

OpenAI said in a blog post that GPT-4 is “more creative and collaborative than ever before” and “can solve difficult problems with greater accuracy, thanks to its broader general knowledge and problem-solving abilities.”

In a simulated law bar exam, GPT-3.5 scored around the bottom 10 percent. GPT-4, however, passed the exam among the top 10 percent.

OpenAI is one of the leading AI research labs in the world, and its GPT models have been used for a wide range of applications, including language translation, chatbots, and content creation. However, the development of such large language models has raised concerns about their safety and ethical implications.

Altman’s comments suggest that OpenAI is aware of the concerns surrounding its GPT models and is taking steps to address them.

While GPT-5 may not be on the horizon, the continued development of GPT-4 and the creation of other models on top of it will undoubtedly raise further questions about the safety and ethical implications of such AI models.  ...'

Since last month’s announcement of Microsoft’s generative AI-powered 365 Copilot — which was described as changing “work as we know it,” the company has been busy integrating the technology into its other applications.

Today, Microsoft announced it has added Copilot to Viva, its employee engagement and experience platform that launched in February 2021 and was part of a bet on the future of remote work. Now the company is betting on the power of generative AI in Viva: According to a blog post, Copilot in Viva “is built on the Microsoft 365 Copilot System, to give leaders an entirely new way to understand and engage their workforce.”

Microsoft 365 Copilot combines OpenAI’s GPT-4 with Microsoft Graph data (from your calendar, emails, chats, documents, meetings) and Microsoft 365 apps including Teams, Word, Outlook and Excel. The company said Copilot in Microsoft Viva will begin rolling out to customers later this year.

Microsoft Copilot in Viva streamlines workforce communications

New Microsoft research released today, the Work Trend Index Special Report, found that high employee engagement correlates with stronger financial performance, and that employee engagement is a key part of overall performance. According to the study, companies with highly-engaged employees focus on clarity via intentional employee communications and goal setting, and they use data to build a powerful “feedback flywheel” to continuously improve over time. 

That’s where AI comes in: According to a company blog post, the new Copilot features for Viva focus on streamlining workforce communications and creating better organizational alignment.

For example, Copilot in Viva Goals can draft OKR recommendations based on existing Word documents, summarize the status of OKRs, identify blockers and suggest next steps. Viva Engage with Copilot can spur post ideas for company intranet pages, and Copilot in Viva Glint, which analyzes employee feedback and will be added to the platform in July, can help summarize thousands of employee survey comments.  ... If you thought the pace of AI development had sped up since the release of ChatGPT last November, well, buckle up. Thanks to the rise of autonomous AI agents like Auto-GPT, BabyAGI and AgentGPT over the past few weeks, the race to get ahead in AI is just getting faster. And, many experts say, more concerning. in VentureBeat

It all started in late March, when developer Toran Bruce Richards, under the name @significantgravitas, launched Auto-GPT, an “experimental open-source application” connected to OpenAI’s GPT-4 by API. Running on Python, Auto-GPT had internet access, long/short-term memory and, by stringing together GPT calls in loops, could act autonomously without requiring a human agent to prompt every action. With just a goal in mind — such as preparing a podcast — it could research information online, for example, and then without being prompted take further action towards the goal, like preparing a list of topics and titles.

Then, on March 29, @yoheinakajima launched BabyAGI, a “task-driven autonomous agent” that leverages GPT-4, Pinecone‘s vector search, and LangChainAI‘s framework to “autonomously create and perform tasks based on an objective” — say, planning and automatically execute a campaign to grow your Twitter following or creating and running a small content marketing business.

As a PhD student at Toronto, Ilya was one of the authors on the 2012 AlexNet paper that completely changed the field of AI, resulting in the widespread adoption of deep learning and the avalanche of AI breakthroughs we’ve seen the past 10 years.
