NEC Penny Tags

I have been long involved with the exploration of RFID tags in retail. Now NEC is indicating that they have developed the long desired passive RFID tags that could cost about one US penny in volume. Of course the cost of an individual tag, say placed on a package is not the only indicator of a breakthrough in tagging. Required infrastructure, integration into packaging, software that generates clear benefit for tagging are all needed to ultimately produce a breakthrough.
