Wal-Mart Grounding Jet.com
No new news, but some of the motivations provided of interest, Would they have thought differently if they knew of the virus coming? Will it fundamentally change how people buy?
Walmart to ground Jet.com
By Dan Berthiaume - 05/19/2020 in CSA
Walmart is winding down a digitally-native retailer it bought for $3 billion in 2016.
The discount giant will cease operating its Jet.com e-commerce subsidiary at an unspecified date. Walmart announced its intention to shutter Jet.com in a two-sentence statement in its first quarter earnings report: “Due to continued strength of the Walmart.com brand, the company will discontinue Jet.com,” Walmart said. “The acquisition of Jet.com nearly four years ago was critical to accelerating our omni strategy.”
On the company's quarterly earnings call with analysts, Walmart CEO Doug McMillion credited the acquisition of Jet.com as “jump-starting the progress we have made the last few years.” He cited the growth of Walmart’s curbside pickup, delivery to the home and expansion of categories beyond groceries, including apparel and home decor. McMillion also said "we're seeing the Walmart brand resonate regardless of income, geography or age." .... "\

Wal-Mart Overhauls Jet Management
An indication of less attention to direct online ordering?
Walmart in big overhaul of Jet.com In ChainStoreAge By CSA STAFF
Walmart is making some big changes at the online retail startup it bought for $3.3 billion in 2016.
The discount giant is merging Jet.com’s retail, technology, marketing, analytics and products teams into the rest of its digital business. The role of president of Jet will be eliminated, and Simon Belsham, who currently holds the title, will leave the company in early August. Walmart announced the changes in a blog post.
“Bringing together talent from Jet and Walmart into joint teams has created more opportunity for our business and our people,” said Marc Lore, founder of Jet.com and president and CEO of Walmart eCommerce U.S. “With the teams creating synergy and Jet becoming even more focused, we don’t have the same need for a dedicated leader.”
Moving forward, Jet’s team leaders will report to Kieran Shanahan, who oversees Walmart’s online food, consumables and health-and-wellness categories. Jet will continue to operate as a standalone site. ... "

Walmart Expanding Digital Focus
Its inevitable to allow them to continue compete. My impression is that they have always been good at utilizing emergent tech.
Walmart is focused on expanding its digital brand portfolio by James Tenser in Retailwire with further expert comment.
Walmart has been throwing its considerable weight into an impressive array of digital strategies, ranging from click-and-collect at its mainline stores to digital-first brands like Jet.com, Bonobos and the newly-launched Allswell.
Walmart is moving fast and making lots of news, but is the strategy making sense?
At the recent Shoptalk conference in Las Vegas, Jet.com president & CEO Mark Lore and Andy Dunn, founder and CEO of Bonobos, discussed some of the reasoning behind Walmart’s digital expansion..... "

Wal-Mart's Personal Shopping Service
Sounds like a powerful idea. Anything else out there on results of this?
Walmart is developing a personal-shopper service for rich moms — and a store with no cashiers ... This ain’t your grandpa’s Walmart.
By Jason Del Rey in ReCode
When Walmart paid $3 billion for Jet.com and its founder Marc Lore, the promise was that the entrepreneur would help the retailer appeal to new types of customers.
Here’s the next step in that evolution.
A new Walmart subsidiary, called Code Eight, has recently started testing a personal shopping service for “busy NYC moms,” according to multiple sources, with the goal of letting them get product recommendations and make purchases simply through text messaging. .... "

More Unattended Delivery by Latch for Wal-Mart
So its not only Amazon doing unattended delivery with specialized door locks. Jet (Now part of Wal-Mart) has also started to do it with smart access startup Latch. At least in some areas this looks to be spreading quickly. Will I see several such locks on a door? Will this mean that many will jump in to secure this channel? Good detail in the article.
Latch touts first deliveries via NY Jet.com smart access tie-up
by Natasha Lomas (@riptari) in Techcrunch
In July b2b smart access startup Latch announced a partnership with ecommerce platform Jet.com to install 1,000 of its smart locks on residential apartment buildings in New York. It’s now announced the first “secure, unattended deliveries” enabled by the installations.
Writing in the customary Medium post, co-founder Luke Schoenfelder says Latch-enabled unattended deliveries kicked off on Monday — and are currently available for “thousands” of New Yorkers (though installations attached to this partnership are still continuing, so it’s not yet completed the full batch).
“Thousands of people in New York City are able to order anything they want from our partners online and know that they can return home to their packages without the threat of theft, inclement weather, or the dreaded ‘sorry we missed you’ door tag,” says Schoenfelder. .... "

Next Gen Personalization
Good piece shows the breadth of tech being used to personalize.
Shop.org Takeaway: Three steps to next-gen personalization
By Deena M.Amato-McCoy in ChainStoreage.
Consumers are becoming more digitally influenced on a seemingly daily basis — but omnichannel retailers find themselves hard-pressed to keep up the pace. Retailers need to meet their needs across all touchpoints, and create a frictionless shopping experience despite where the shopping journey starts and ends.
To achieve this goal, successful retailers are adopting a new digital tools that allow them to “connect the dots,” and personally engage shoppers before, during and following the shopping experience. Industry observers discussed this new level of personalization during Shop.org, held in Los Angeles, Sept. 25-28.
Among the top solutions are:
Voice: Conversational commerce is shaping up to be one of the year’s hottest disruptors, and momentum continues to grow. As customers grow more comfortable using digital voice assistants found on devices like Amazon Echo and Dot, Google Home, and others, retailers have a new way to personalize the shopping experience, and remove some of the friction that still occurs via online and mobile transactions.
Jet.com Walmart’s e-commerce arm, is so bullish on voice that it is one of the company’s “top priorities this year,” Marc Lore, president and CEO, of Walmart e-commerce U.S., said at shop.org.
“You have to look beyond the technology and toward what it enables,” Lore added. “It’s more than a tool that helps customers order product for delivery. It gives us the chance to connect with shoppers one-on-one. And we can use data to become better merchandisers.”
Artificial intelligence: Retailers that use AI are essentially adopting programs that teach their computers to learn patterns. Then brands can use results to deliver better customer experiences.
AI is playing a critical role across Disney’s retail channels. Committed to delivering “a more immersive, personalized, and robust omnichannel experience than ever before, “Disney is adding AI to our e-commerce site so we can help improve the guest experience online and in-store,” said Mike White, senior VP and chief technology officer for Disney consumer products and interactive media.
AI is helping Disney understand its best-selling category SKUs searched online, and then using this data to evaluate customer affinities. “Then we can expand online and in-store assortments, which add more value to their experiences,” he added. .... "

Wal-Mart Move Against Amazon
When I ask people about using Jet, they rarely know what it is. Interesting that Wal-Mart is trying to expand that brand. Note the essentials emphasis.

Wal-Mart and Jet
Podcast on Knowledge@Wharton:
" .... Wal-Mart this week brought more muscle to its competition with Amazon by buying online shopping site Jet.com. Wal-Mart Stores will pay $3.3 billion for the two-year-old Hoboken-based firm. Jet.com’s “gain sharing” business model revolves around persuading customers to bunch their orders and pass on the savings in shipping costs with lower price tags.
Opinions are sharply divided over the wisdom of Wal-Mart’s move. For many analysts, however, Wal-Mart’s eagerness to strengthen its online attractiveness is seen as the right driver to grow its business, even if its strategies to achieve that goal are debatable. .. "

Jet vs Amazon
Finally had a chance to look at the e-commerce sales venture Jet. Heavily promoted. Well constructed. Which makes a particular point of Amazon price comparisons. $50 a year membership, considerable savings claims. Bundling and quantity savings offers.
Initial thought is that it will be difficult to get the critical mass of those that are already on Amazon, who can try Amazon's offerings. A much smaller number will go to Jet for just what it has to offer.
Amazon can adjust prices to be competitive. It also has supply chain scale. See also In Mashable. Which has a good analysis of the effort. Continuing to follow.
