Future of Product Design
The Future of Product Design (Free EBook via Autodesk with registration) How Emerging Technologies Are Disrupting the Product Lifecycle By Jonathan Follett
Design and production considerations change throughout any product's lifecycle—from prototype to market introduction, through growth and maturity, and finally into decline—with each stage introducing its own set of challenges. But emerging technologies such as 3D printing, robotics, wearables, the IoT, and genomics are disrupting every stage of this lifecycle as they reinvigorate existing categories and create entirely new ones. ..... Continuous Design and PLM
Continuous Design: Had not heard of this concept. Reminds me of product life cycle management (PLM) , but including operations more directly. A good thought. " ... Towards continuous design .... A deep integration across design, development, and operations is critical to digital business success..... " . Mentioned book: Design for Dasein by Thomas Wendt.

Talk on the Digital Age
Recent talk by my colleague Suna Polat from CimData on innovation in a digital age. As it relates to PLM. Slides and audio. Nicely done. Also some interesting details about how P&G worked in this area. They write about the Webinar:
" ... Many companies are still struggling to make innovation a repeatable, systemic process that leads to consistent business growth. Besides critical human aspects, such as leadership and culture, systemic innovation requires the implementation and use of strategic business platforms. An innovation platform is a business platform designed to enable an enterprise’s innovation processes. Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is evolving to become a strategic product innovation platform. Another trend started in early 2000’s, now widely adopted, is "Open Innovation." This strategic direction led to new approaches to innovation, such as crowdsourcing and co-creation that CIMdata collectively calls "Collaborative Innovation." Through Collaborative Innovation (CI), an organization can reach to diverse internal and external networks to address its critical innovation needs. Companies that practice CI typically use solutions that are outside those provided by traditional PLM solution providers.
In this webinar, through a systemic innovation case study from P&G, we will describe use cases appropriate for PLM and CI. We will also describe how PLM and CI solution providers have an opportunity to connect and collaborate to expand their markets by developing consistent terminology and communication around innovation and clarifying how their offerings complement each other and fit into the solution architecture of their clients with clear benefits. With such clarity more companies should be willing to invest in these solutions. ... "

Can Collaborative Innovation and Technology Accelerate and Lower the Cost of Innovation?
In CIMdata's Linkedin Group: My former colleague writes.
CIMdata's Dr. Suna Polat asks the question, Can Collaborative Innovation and Technology Accelerate and Lower the Cost of Innovation?”
I experienced a strategic “innovation” transformation when I worked in Procter & Gamble’s (P&G) diaper business between 1996 and 2007. In my first assignment the name of the business was “Diaper Category,” later it became “Baby Care.” This was an indication of a significant change in the business strategy—the focus was no longer only on the product (the diaper) but also on the job-to-be done (caring for the baby.) ... Mass Customization in Manufacturing
A long time interest. Good piece on how it relates to innovation. It has considerable variation in different industries. Have seen it from the research and the manufacturing end. Make sure to get your data consistent to make it easy to implement and adapt innovations.
" ... The mass production strategies put forth by the titans of the 20th century still resonate today on manufacturing floors, in business processes, and the systems that support them, like Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). Personalization and production efficiency have long been believed to be on the opposite ends of a continuum; mutually exclusive benefits that manufacturers and consumers are forced to choose between. In the last decade, however, innovative companies in a broad range of industries have shattered this dichotomy.
To get started, manufacturers should consider current challenges, historical approaches and the potential benefits of a modern mass customization model. ... "

Procter Product Lifecycle Management
From Consumer Goods Magazine:
P&G Optimizes Packaging and Artwork Initiatives
Procter & Gamble (P&G) extends the scope of its V6 PLM implementation to incorporate global packaging and artwork initiatives. This builds on the previously announced strategic selection of Dassault Systemes' (DS) solutions for an enterprise-wide PLM process. Together, P&G and Dassault are developing an integrated suite of products to help make the packaging process more efficient, improve speed to market, increase shelf impact and, ultimately, create a better experience for consumers. Streamlining these services is another example of how DS is supporting P&G's focus on "Simplify, Scale & Execute", which is one of the company's key growth strategies.
"As P&G continues to serve more consumers, in more parts of the world, more completely, it is essential we have the right tools in place to drive greater efficiency," says Michael Telljohann, PLM director, P&G. "To address these opportunities as they arise, it's imperative that mission critical business processes like artwork and packaging move from a series of best-in-class point solutions to enterprise-wide integrated solutions. Dassault Systèmes' suite of V6 PLM products will help P&G drive scale, improve R&D productivity and accelerate the delivery of new products to market." .... '

Procter Approach to Global Product Management
A CG article on the topic with good detail. Includes a link to the Web seminar recording.
" ... P&G recently established a Corporate Standards System (CSS) to streamline its PLM operations into one global work process ... Specs are approved three times faster than before, giving innovators more time to spend on innovating; 95 percent of the specs are right the first time, saving time wasted on re-work; plant/administrative resources save data re-entry efforts; regulatory compliance is reached with less effort; suppliers and contract manufacturers are on the same page, resulting in quality incident reduction; and supply chain transparency results in direct material savings....
