Chinese vendor Huawei may effectively be banned from buying 5G components from U.S. companies, but that hasn’t stopped the firm from releasing what one analyst firm considers to be the top 5G RAN portfolio in the industry.

In its first competitive assessment of the 5G radio access network (RAN) market, GlobalData ranked Huawei No. 1 over Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and ZTE. Nokia to completely exit the Russian market

Finnish telecom giant Nokia (NOK) announced plans Tuesday to completely exit the Russian market. NOK, which previously took such steps as suspending deliveries and moving R&D operations out of Russia, said a complete cessation of business there shouldn't impact the firm's previously announced 2022 outlook.

Putin says talks are at a 'dead end'

Vladimir Putin said peace talks with Ukraine are "at a dead end" and that Russia's military operation is going according to plan, Bloomberg reported. Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said talks continue and Russia is trying to put pressure on peace negotiations.

Ukraine war will curb trade, growth - WTO

In the latest grim economic outlook to emerge, the Geneva-based trade body pointed to multiple uncertainties in its forecast over the next two years because Russian and Ukrainian exports of items like food, oil and fertilizers are under threat from the war.

Chemical weapons?

As Russia prepares for a significant new offensive in eastern Ukraine, allegations have surfaced that Ukrainians in the besieged city of Mariupol came under a Russian chemical weapons attack on Monday. The Azov battalion claimed a Russian drone dropped a "poisonous substance of unknown origin" on troops and civilians, while Ukrainian lawmaker Ivanna Klympush said people were suffering from respiratory failure and neurological problems. No independent evidence of the attack has yet emerged, though Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the U.S. will "continue to monitor the situation closely." .... '

Nokia Launches first AI Use Case Library for CSPs

Always like representative use cases.  Especially if they have detailed and useful details.  Like the specifics of data being used and sources.

Nokia launches the first AI use case library on public cloud for CSPs     by TelecomLead

Nokia, in collaboration with Microsoft, today announced the world’s first deployment of multiple AI use cases delivered over public cloud.

Nokia AVA AI as a service integrates Nokia’s security framework with Microsoft Azure’s digital architecture, allowing communications service  providers (CSPs) to securely inject AI into their networks nine times faster than using private cloud and scale fast across their network.

AI use cases are essential for CSPs to manage the business complexity that 5G and cloud networks bring, and will help accelerate digital transformation, Nokia said. The AI as a service enables faster deployment while also eliminating the concerns around data sovereignty and security.

After the initial data set-up, CSPs can deploy additional AVA AI use cases within one week and ramp-up or ramp-down resources as needed within one day across multiple network clusters.

The Nokia security framework on Azure ensures data is segregated and isolated to provide the same level of security as a private cloud.

Australian mobile operator TPG was the first commercial adopter of Nokia AVA AI on public cloud, using a local instance of Microsoft Azure. This means TPG can deploy and scale additional AI use cases fast and has been able to optimize network coverage, capacity and performance.

Some of the capabilities include the following:

Detecting network anomalies with great accuracy.

Reducing radio frequency optimization cycle times by 50%, allowing them to be performed more frequently and at lower cost.

Decreasing CO2 emissions by eliminating drive-testing.

Switzerland-based Assaia International AG, an NVIDIA Metropolis partner and member of the NVIDIA Inception acceleration platform for AI startups, is deploying a deep learning solution at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) to help airport employees monitor the turnaround time between flights. 

The Turnaround Control tool will help the airport work with its airline partners to improve turnaround transparency, identify situations that most often cause delayed flights, and notify employees of deviations from the schedule. 

“Assaia’s technology adds critical data points to CVG’s early-stage neural network for operational advancements,” said Brian Cobb, the airport’s chief innovation officer. “Structured data generated by artificial intelligence will provide information to make decisions, optimize airside processes, and improve efficiency and safety.”

The company uses NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier modules and the NVIDIA Metropolis intelligent video analytics platform to run image recognition and predictive analysis algorithms on video streams from multiple cameras around an airport. 

By installing cameras at several gates, airports can optimize the cleaning, restocking and servicing of planes — saving time for customers and costs for the airlines.

Noki Bell Labs Prize for Processor Solving Optimization Problems

Note that the method combines quantum and classical methods in processors to solve discrete optimization problems.  These kinds of problems can be computationally very difficult and are commonly encountered.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, INC. and OMRON Corporation have agreed to conduct joint field trials using 5G at their plants and other production sites. As part of the trial, Nokia will provide the enabling 5G technology and OMRON the factory automation equipment while NTT DOCOMO will run the 5G trial.

The trial follows the increasing demand for wireless communications at manufacturing sites driven by the need for stable connectivity between IoT devices. As background noise from machines and the movement of people have the potential to interfere with wireless communications, the trial will aim to verify the reliability and stability of 5G technology deployed by conducting radio wave measurements and transmission experiments.

During the trial, Nokia, DOCOMO and OMRON will aim to establish the feasibility of the concept of a layout-free production line with Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs). As product cycles become shorter due to fast-changing consumer demands, manufacturing sites are under increasing pressure to rearrange production lines at short notice. By taking advantage of 5G's high speed, large capacity, low latency and ability to connect multiple devices, the trial will see AMRs automatically conveying components to the exact spot where they are required based on communication with production line equipment.  .... On Technological Evolution

Last week I gave a speech at Hannes Sjöblad’s “Singularity Evenings” at SUP46 (Startup People Stockholm). I recorded it and put it online. Unfortunately the videocamera ran out of battery after 15 minutes, but on popular demand I have stitched up the audio and the slides.

Nokia Looks at the Connected Car

In GigaOM:   Not unexpected, though I was a little surprised seeing Nokia here. A good overview of that this might look like:

P&G Hosts Digital Future

Yesterday P&G hosted a number of top Silicon Valley execs in their downtown offices.  Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo, Amazon, Nokia, Coke. .. etc. I have been reading some of the press coverage and feeds this morning.  Mostly advertising and marketing oriented, which is what you can expect from a company like Procter.  Nothing very new that I have seen in the reports.  Though many of the real deals happen backstage.    Thought they could have involved more local talent in this to integrate the ideas more broadly.    Lots of opportunity here to make new things happen.  Ready to join in.

Smartphone Based Brain Scanning

Another interesting sensory application: " A team of researchers from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) have developed a portable EEG system powered by a Nokia N900 smartphone. In addition to the phone, the portable EEG also consists of a commercially available Emotive EPOC wireless EEG headset and specially designed app.... " .  How well this works is unclear.
