Wal-Mart Buys Polymorph Labs

Wal-Mart continues to push tech.  Now for online, digital targeted ads.

Walmart acquires adtech startup Polymorph Labs to scale up its ad business  By Sarah Perez   @sarahintampa

Amazon has a large and growing advertising business, but rival Walmart’s own ad business is much smaller. It’s now working to change that. Earlier this year, the retailer consolidated ad sales for its stores and websites and said it was ready to start monetizing its shopper data on a grander scale. Today, its efforts continue as Walmart says it has bought the advertising technology company Polymorph Labs to help it better compete via online digital ads, targeted using shopper data.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. ... "

Amazon's Ad Supported Video Service

Should be quite interesting.   Will this also be available via Prime and video enabled assistants?  Makes sense if ads are included.  Another link to individual interests and preferences.   A replacement for the removal of Youtube from assistant video services?

Amazon's AD-Supported Video Service Faces many Hurdles, but the Upsize is Huge  By George P. Slefo.  in Adage.

Amazon's planned ad-supported video service is poised to jump out of the gate with significant advantages over rivals in traditional TV and even streaming TV.

The product, described in new detail last week by The Information and reported earlier by Ad Age, will offer free video with ads to people who use Amazon's Fire TV streaming device.

It will face tall hurdles as it competes for viewers and revenue against the established TV business as well as tech players such as Hulu, Google, Roku, Netflix and others. And it's an entirely different animal than Prime Video, the company's subscription-based, ad-free streaming service. But Free Dive, as The Information says the planned service is currently called, should also pack some serious assets, courtesy of the rest of Amazon's business. ... "

Google and Shopify vs Amazon

Google and Shopify   in Retailwire by Matthew Stern

Google is making it easier for retailers and brands to get their ads out on some of the media giant’s most popular platforms, and it’s using Shopify to do it.

Google is rolling out a suite of tools that allow retailers to buy ads directly through Shopify and display them in places like Google’s search interface, Google Maps and YouTube, according to Bloomberg. The main tool is replacing the need to set up and track individual ad campaigns on each Google service. Other commerce-related tools Google is launching include one that enhances the keyword relevance of brands’ ads and increases click-throughs and a tool meant to push foot traffic to stores via online ads.  ... P&G Cuts $100 Million in Digital Ads

P&G Cuts More Than $100 Million in ‘Largely Ineffective’ Digital Ads
Consumer product giant steers clear of ‘bot’ traffic and objectionable content ...

Almost all of the consumer product giant’s advertising cuts in the period came from digital, finance chief Jon Moeller said on its earnings call Thursday. The company targeted ads that could wind up on sites with fake traffic from software known as “bots,” or those with objectionable content.

“What it reflected was a choice to cut spending from a digital standpoint where it was ineffective, where either we were serving bots as opposed to human beings or where the placement of ads was not facilitating the equity of our brands,” he said. ... "

Examining Digital Advertising

In Technology Review.    Read the complete thing.

Digital Advertising Takes a Hit
Big-name advertisers have begun to question whether they’ve placed too much faith—and money—in targeted advertising.   by Kate Kaye

Since its infancy in the 1990s, the digital advertising industry has trumpeted the special power of digital ads. Unlike newspaper or television ads, online advertising can be aimed precisely at the very people a company wants to reach, so businesses won’t waste money by showing ads to those consumers outside predetermined parameters.

Then last year Procter & Gamble’s chief marketing officer, Marc Pritchard, declared that the company would pull back on ad targeting on Facebook. One of a number of recent announcements by Pritchard regarding P&G’s dissatisfaction with digital advertising, the news led some to question the value of digital advertising’s distinguishing characteristic: its capacity to target narrow segments of the population.

P&G’s reĆ«valuation of its approach is part of a trend that appears to be growing among advertisers, says Tom Riordan, special operations consultant at Adobe Advertising Cloud, a platform that helps advertisers manage ad strategy and measurement (see “The End of Internet Advertising as We Know It”) .... Digital Ads Overtaking Traditional

Digital Ads to Overtake Traditional Ads in U.S. Local Markets by 2018
By Suman Bhattacharyya

If there was any doubt that the future of local advertising is digital, the latest local ad revenue forecast from BIA/Kelsey confirms that revenue from local-focused online ads will exceed that of traditional ads aimed at local audiences by 2018.  It's part of a digital transformation of local-focused ads in communities across the country, and risks sidelining traditional print ads. ...
