Social media giant Meta announced its intention to lower the recommended minimum age for users of its Quest virtual reality (VR) headset to 10 from 13. Meta said creating accounts for preteens would require parental approval, while young users would only see applications and content appropriate for their age group. However, VR games are rife with harassment, assaults, bullying, and hate speech, while researchers warn there are few measures for easily reporting misbehavior. Josh Golin at nonprofit children's advocacy group Fairplay said Meta did not prove the safety of its VR products for young people before lowering its age recommendation, which Fairplay said is "clearly driven by the fact that they are trying to compete for a market, not driven by kids' needs." ... A neural network developed by researchers at Disney offers a cheaper, faster way to make actors look older or younger in TV or film. Disney said the artificial intelligence technique called FRAN (Face Re-aging Network) is "the first practical, fully automatic, and production-ready method for re-aging faces in video images." The researchers trained FRAN to learn how a person's appearance changes with age by feeding it thousands of images of faces synthetically aged from 18 to 85 years old by StyleGAN2. Disney said the “production-ready” system is the first able to age an actor’s image in various expressions, lighting conditions, and viewpoints. ... '

Is Slow Neuroinformatics Private?

I have worked with companies which used machine learning image analysis to determine, for example, if a person was 'of age' in various locations.  To match with local regulatory provisions.    Could be done quite accurately, about 95%, but not perfectly.  Can that be privately done?

Neuroinformatics engineers at Ruhr-Universitat Bochum's Institute for Neural Computation in Germany have developed an algorithm that estimates an individual’s age and ethnic origin with greater than human-level accuracy. The team fed the algorithm several thousand photos of faces of different ages, sorted by age. The system disregarded features that varied between images, and only considered features that slowly changed over time. In calculating the age of the people in the photos, the algorithm outperformed even human assessment. The algorithm also estimated the correct ethnic origin of the subjects in the photos with greater than 99% probability, even though the images' average brightness was standardized, making skin color an insignificant marker for recognition. ... "

Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) researchers in Russia have demonstrated that physical activity data obtained from wearable computing devices can be used to generate digital biomarkers of aging and frailty. "Recent promising examples in the field of medicine include neural networks showing cardiologist-level performance in detection of the arrhythmia in ECG data, deriving biomarkers of age from clinical blood biochemistry, and predicting mortality based on electronic medical records," notes MIPT's Peter Fedichev. "Inspired by these examples, we explored AI potential for Health Risks Assessment based on human physical activity." The scientists analyzed physical activity records and clinical data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and trained a neural network to predict biological age and mortality risk of participants in a week-long stream of activity measurements. A convolutional neural network was used to deconstruct the most biologically relevant motion patterns and establish their relation to general health and recorded lifespan. ... "
