This came to my attention recently when I was asked for a simple self image to use on a startup web site. How much should we edit? We have the tools now. At very least by taking lots of images in many contexts. But in the past, or now, we could go to a professional portraitist and get advice on how to produce an image. Self-portraiture has become ubiquitous. Once an awkward feat, the "selfie"—a picture of one's self taken by one's self, typically at arm's length—is now easily accomplished with any smartphone, and often shared with others through social media. A 2013 poll indicated selfies accounted for one-third of photos taken within the 18-to-24 age group. Google estimated in 2014 that 93 billion selfies were taken per day just by Android users alone. More recently, selfie taking has begun to influence human behavior in the physical world. Museums have started to develop environments that cater specifically to Instagram and Snapchat users. Even facial plastic surgeons have observed an increase in the number of patients that seek plastic surgery specifically to look better in selfies (55% of surgeons had such patients in 2017, up 13% from 2016).2 Perhaps most strikingly, plastic surgeons have begun reporting a new phenomenon termed "Snapchat dysmorphia," where patients seek surgery to adjust their features to correspond to those achieved through digital filters ... Robots with Sense of Self?
We often found it useful, when modeling a conversation to introduce the 'self' aspect for concepts like memory, context and goals. These were not for guiding physical robots, but robotic processes. Still useful for noting and evaluating competitive goals and options. Also elements of risk to individual 'selves'. Might also be used in the 'digital twin' concepts when modeling human behavior? Article below made me think of how the concept could be used.

Having a sense of self lies at the heart of what it means to be human. Without it, we couldn't navigate, interact, empathise or ultimately survive in an ever-changing, complex world of others. We need a sense of self when we are taking action, but also when we are anticipating the consequences of potential actions, by ourselves or others.
Given that we want to incorporate robots into our social world, it's no wonder that creating a sense of self in artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the ultimate goals for researchers in the field. If these machines are to be our carers or companions, they must inevitably have an ability to put themselves in our shoes. While scientists are still a long way from creating robots with a human-like sense of self, they are getting closer.

Ultimate Selfie Sculpture
In Digital Signage Connection. Though this is nearby, I was unaware of it. Ultimate self-referencing engagement?

Bringing a truly unique experience to visitors, the sculpture named “As We Are” incorporates a 32-camera 3D photobooth within the LED head form and uses photogrammetry to map a photo of a visitor’s head onto the surface of the sculpture. This attracts passersby from inside and outside the glass-walled lobby.

Self Assembling Robots
Reported in CWorld: " ... Scientists create self-assembling, working robots ... These origami robots can fold up and walk away ... Then add to the mix that it's a laser-cut origami robot and you have the new robotic technology created by a team of engineers from Harvard, the Wyss Institute and MIT.... " Self assembly is such a biological, powerful notion. Even scary when taken to to its eventual endpoint. Not self replication here, but self assembling. In particular for spacecraft applications that have tight limits in their form and volume requirements. More detailed Wyss Institute report.
