Goodbye Posterous

I see today that the simple blogging engine Posterous is soon to be deleted.  I set up Posterous blogs for several people.  It was a particularly easy to use method, and yet largely complete in its capabilities.  Twitter bought it, let it languish for several years, and now is letting it die so they can 'focus on other things'. I understand there were many hundreds of thousands of users.  Too bad.

Posterous Becomes Social

I have recommended Posterous for a beginner's blogging engine for beginners.  In particular for its ability to work with mobile.   I created a few templates for the use of friends that were interested in starting in blogging.  Now it has made some changes to becoming more social.   This appears to make it more complex, not sure I like that, but am taking a closer look.  There are lots of other opportunities for social that most people will use anyway.

Posterous App Group Management

Posterous has announced updates to its mobile apps, for both iOS and Android. The updated versions of the apps bring support for creating and managing Posterous Groups, which is an email list-like service that can be used either as a traditional email list, or as a group sharing service. Up until now, you could only set up a new group via email....'

I see that the Posterous Blogging system has now added a group capability.  Useful for communicating with groups of people via email blog posts.   I have mentioned Posterous here before, a simple, easy to use blogging system that I recommend for novice bloggers.

Twitter's 145 Million Users

A GigaOM post on Twitter's 145 Million Users.  My comments:

I have now used Twitter for over two years. I started using it as an experiment to see if it could increase visitors to this blog. It seems to have, though many other things have changed at the same time, so it is hard to determine cause and effect. During that same time advanced mobile use has exploded.

I remain skeptical of Twitter. I would prefer some sort of incentive to restrict messages to 160 characters, but also be allowed to provide more if I want to. It is true there are lots of interesting and useful things out in Twitter, but if you take a close look at the stream ..... most of it is ... twit. It is true you can link your own more detail writings easily from twitter to a blog. There are many easy to use blogs like Posterous.

Posterous gets an App

In ReadwriteWeb:  The minimalist blogging platform called Posterous is something I am experimenting with for getting blogging into the hand of clients.  They now have an IPhone App to make this easier.  Will try.  First look: Good, it is easy to use.  Not for editing but fine for putting up pictures and descriptions quickly.

Posterous

A friend recommended the Posterous package some time ago. It's a quick and easy way to set up a blog from email and mobile. I will not be replacing this blog, but I will use it as a place to store more informal information, drafts and documents I will not place here directly. See my posterous space here, which I will continue to refine. Based on what I have seen there so far it looks like a good place to start blogging, with the right elements needed to provide value.
