Many of those in supply chain management learned early on the principles of just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing. Inspired by the work of Taiichi Ohno at Toyota Motor Co., the JIT revolution tightly coupled production and demand, resulting in little or no work-in-process inventory. Subsequently, it went on to change how supply chains ran. JIT fostered demand-driven, agile and lean processes, and contributed to breaking down functional silos inside an organization.

The adoption of JIT principles resulted in more than four decades of economic prosperity for global manufacturing and distribution. Yet much of that success relied on enabling factors that were existing at the time. To anticipate customer demand, companies relied on past sales data. They also assumed that customers would act rationally, with trade-offs that could be easily evaluated, and would respond logically to incentives.

To reduce inventory, companies depended on predictable transportation, with fast loading and unloading at ports around the world, and high availability of road, rail, barge and final-mile transportation. They were able to synchronize supply and demand by relying on abundant raw materials and components flowing through integrated supply chains, dedicated suppliers and manufacturing capacity.

Many of those assumptions no longer hold. COVID-19 has changed sales patterns and created holes in historical data. The new generation of consumers — digitally native, socially and eco-conscious — is changing demand patterns, making them more unpredictable than ever before.

This new world brings fresh opportunities to rethink how we plan and run supply chains. Succeeding under these conditions begins with three simple changes.

Adopt a probabilistic mindset. Probabilistic modeling is a technique that factors possible events or actions and their probabilities. Probabilistic planning involves predicting future outcomes and making plans that lead to desired cost and benefits. The most common example is a probabilistic demand forecast that outlines expected demand, while including a confidence interval or a probability model around it.

In fact, many parameters in planning should be modeled probabilistically. Lead times in master data are often inflated to represent worst-case figures. Planning leaders should demand that their systems model all the variability around lead times to factor the impact of shipments arriving early or late. Think beyond a future described by “one number,” and take in the wide range of potential outcomes.  ... '

A Google algorithm deployed in partnership with nonprofit GiveDirectly notified nearly 3,500 hurricane victims in Florida of $700 in financial aid via their smartphones. The algorithm used satellite imagery to identify residents in severely damaged neighborhoods who qualified for emergency assistance. Google's Delphi mapping software powers the Florida project, highlighting communities in need after disasters such as hurricanes by overlaying live maps of damage with information on poverty from sources including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Google's Skai tool supplies storm-damage data by analyzing satellite images from before and after disasters and estimating the severity of damage. ... '

Duke Energy Smart Healing Grids

Been following this for some time, impressive results so far.  Much more to be done. 



Smart, self-healing technology in Florida helped to automatically restore more than 160,000 customer outages during powerful storm

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 24, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- As Hurricane Ian made its way across Florida, Duke Energy's grid improvements were already on the job helping to combat power outages from the storm.

Smart, self-healing technology helped to automatically restore more than 160,000 customer outages and saved nearly 3.3 million hours (nearly 200 million minutes) of total lost outage time.
"Hurricane Ian is a strong reminder of the importance of grid hardening and storm preparedness to help keep the lights on for our customers," said Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida state president. "Self-healing technology is just one of many grid improvements that Duke Energy is making to avoid outages, restore service faster and increase reliability for our customers."

Much like the GPS in your car can identify an accident ahead and reroute you around the incident to keep you on your way, self-healing technology is like a GPS for the grid. The technology can quickly identify power outages and alternate energy pathways to restore service faster for customers when an outage occurs.

Additionally, self-healing technology provides a smart tool to assist crews in the field with power restoration after a major storm like Ian, helping reduce outage impacts and freeing up resources t help restore power in other locations.

Three days after Hurricane Ian exited the state, Duke Energy Florida wrapped up restoration of approximately 1 million customers. This progress enabled the company to deploy more than 550 Duke Energy workers from throughout Florida, as well as contractors from across the country, to help restore power for Lee County Electric Cooperative customers.

Crews worked in Cape Coral and Pine Island, one of the hardest-hit areas in the storm's path and completed power restoration for the majority of customers on Pine Island within approximately one week after arriving to the island.

Prior to Ian in 2022, smart, self-healing technology had helped avoid nearly 250,000 extended customer outages in Florida, saving around 285,000 hours (17.1 million minutes) of total lost outage time.
Duke Energy currently serves around 59% of customers in Florida with self-healing capabilities on its main power distribution lines, with a goal of serving around 80% over the next few years.

Artificial intelligence and global positioning system (GPS) technology could help save lives in wildfires, floods, and other natural disasters by getting emergency alerts out faster. Last month, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security completed a proof-of-concept test on a satellite-based alert sent to automobiles' GPS navigation systems. Meanwhile, Pascal Schuback from the nonprofit Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup said he has been working with companies and organizations on a service for Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant to process emergency alerts. Schuback envisions a scenario in which Alexa could instruct a garage to open and a self-driving car to back out following an imminent tremor alert. Recent applications designed to help people keep in touch on disaster alerts include the Federal Emergency Management Agency app, which transmits real-time emergency alerts from the National Weather Service and California fire monitor Watch Duty. ...
