Augmented Pixels Example for Theater Engagement

Daria Gaioshko of the Odessa, Ukraine company Augmented Pixels, sends along this new example of a promotional App for user engagement at a cinema.    I am now testing for alternative applications.

" ... Augmented Pixels releases MaxiKoltuk, the Augmented Reality game for promotional campaigns and user engagement at the cinemas.

Augmented Pixels Reality Hoops Game

This continues my conversations with developers in the Augmented reality space. Here with the Ukranian firm Augmented Pixels. A new free game developed and then updated this fall is called Reality Hoops. I confirmed it will run on iPad and iPhone running IOS7.

The idea is very simple.  A moving basketball hoop is displayed in front of whatever your phone is pointed at, which provides a 'reality' background.  You flick the basketball with your finger, adjust that until it makes a hoop.  Motion and physics are smooth.   Scoring and a leader board, a challenge architecture is provided. Scoring compatible with the Apple Game Center.   It is easy to learn, and fun to play, but hardly addictive to me. Still a useful demonstration of AR and gaming.

I have been thinking about ways to integrate games and the 'augmenting' aspects of games to real spaces.   Here the integration is loose.  The local background reality is amusing, but is not augmented in any way.  It made me think about how the background could interact with the game while still being playable.

Augmented Pixels

Recently brought to my attention this augmented reality delivery company: Augmented Pixels  (Formerly AR3D )  For advertising, sales and entertainment implementations.  With development offices in the Ukraine and Russia.   Their Blog.  An interesting interview with their CEO in Forbes USA on augmented reality.  A library of over 100 use cases developed using AR.  I found this latter slide share very intriguing for use with potential customers in the space.

Pepsi in Augmented Reality Digest

An interesting digest of augmented reality applications, most in marketing and entertainment driven, a good view of what is going on commercially in the space.  From Augmented Pixels.  Featured, Pepsi's effort:

" ...  Pepsi Max Launches “Invading” Campaign in London
london augmented pepsiPepsi utilized augmented reality technology long time ago, Their campaigns and app always provide some fresh ideas and original look and feel. This time Pepsi installed the “Unbelievable Bus Shelter” as a part of the brand’s Unbelievable campaign on New Oxford Street in London with digital technology and a camera facing the street behind the shelter, giving the allusion that the digital display was a glass window panel.

The different effects including an alien invasion, falling fireballs, running tigers, killer robots, etc.were then played on top of this image, causing passers by to stop, stare and take pictures. Augmented reality is used to play digital content on top of real-world images, giving the illusion that situations are happening in real life. ... "

Real Estate and Augmented Reality

An obvious application.  Has been tried a great deal.   But it still needs something sensory beyond simple 3D viewing.  What kind of sensory augmentation could make this happen?  Notes from a recent conference on disruptive technologies.   At the right an example of an architectural and commercial AR display from correspondent Augmented Pixels.  See links above and below for much more.

Facebook Reveals Holographic Optics for Thin, Light VR Headsets

Technically interesting  next step via Facebook.  Still apparently in early stages.

Facebook Reveals Holographic Optics for Thin, Light VR Headsets
VentureBeat
Jeremy Horwitz

Facebook has unveiled a holographic optical framework for thinner, lighter virtual reality (VR) headsets, which it expects to be incorporated within high-performance devices for VR and augmented reality. The "pancake optics" system combines thin layers of holographic film with a laser projection system and directional backlights, in order to project either flat imagery or volumetric holograms. The optical system can range from 11 millimeters to less than 9 millimeters thick, while each prototype eye display has a resolution of about 1,200 by 1,600 pixels, with a field of view that is either a 93-degree circle or a 92-by-69-degree rectangle. The researchers said the device is not ready for near-term deployment. .. "
